Their rocky marriage may have been short-lived, but it seems Madonna is still holding a torch for her fiery ex Sean Penn.
For the second time this year, Madonna has publicly declared her love for Sean who she was married to for four years before their divorce in 1989.
The latest overture came when she called him on stage at a Raising Malawi charity auction in Miami – Madonna has two adopted children from the impoverished African natio
He crawled in between her legs and slapped handcuffs on her playfully. She told the audience she would marry him again if he bid US$150,000 for a necklace. He did, but was later outbid.
“I’m still in love with you,” Madonna told Sean onstage, as he blushed. “Yes. In fact, I think I love you more now that we’re divorced.”
While Penn and Madonna seemed close throughout the night and have remained friends after their divorce, their marriage was riddled with issues.
Madonna initially applied for divorce only two years after their wedding, only to withdraw it shortly after and apply again two years after that.
All seemed to be forgiven at the star-studded charity event, however, where Madonna and Sean auctioned off rare wedding photographs taken by the late Herb Ritts.
Madonna also chipped in with tour memorabilia and pieces from her own art collection to boost the night’s haul to a reported US$7.5 million.
The guest of honour was also joined on stage by Ariana Grande who modelled an outfit up for auction from Madonna’s 2015 Rebel Heart tour, while briefly engaged in double twerking session and an on-stage kiss.
One of the most emotional elements of the night was a moving speech from Madonna’s son David, 11, who spoke after a documentary played showing his life in Malawi.
His mother had died in childbirth and his three siblings were also dead when Madonna adopted him. He revealed he had pneumonia and malaria at the time.
