Reiki for pets? Yes, it’s a thing. Our resident Reiki master and Yogini, Trudy Vains, explains how this ancient energy healing can benefit our beloved fur family members.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing practice that involves the channelling of a natural healing energy from the divine universe to whoever or whatever you are sending healing to. Our traditional way of thinking is, we learn this practice to heal ourselves and other people. Sometimes it’s forgotten that we can use Reiki Universal Healing on every living thing that has energy. This encompasses Reiki for pets, plants, water, food, places, things and scenarios or situations, as well as human beings. The applications are endless, and it can only make for a better life.

We are all born with this amazing channelling and healing ability. All you need to do is believe.

Here is a quick exercise to acknowledge your energy and its healing power

  • Place your hands together then rub them vigorously for about 10 seconds.
  • Pause and breathe deeply.
  • Keep your hands together. Acknowledge what they feel like. They are likely to feel warm.
Slowly begin to separate your hands. They will feel like magnets but continue moving your hands further apart until the magnetised feeling starts to wane.  Then stop.
  • Bring your hands closer back together until magnetised feeling returns and your hands feel quite heavy.
  • Pause again and breathe. Notice the energetic feeling in your hands.
  • Bring your hands to your heart. Feel the warmth from the universe. Allow your body to absorb all of the love from yourself, to yourself.

Reiki For Pets – How To Implement It

Performing Reiki for pets is exactly the same principle. Do the exercise from above, but instead of pouring the energy into you, it goes directly to your pet.

Pets love Reiki. They can feel it before you come near them. They will most likely seek you out, so be prepared for more and more of this. After all, your pets crave energetic love and attention as much as we do! Your pet is a sentient being and as such, feels emotional and physical pain the same way that you do. This is why Reiki is so important.

Think about when you might feel energetically flat. Your pet might feel like that at times too. When you recognise this, you can help them! All you need to do is simply place your hands on your pet. Or, you can practice Reiki ‘hands off’ which means that your hands are along the aura line (energy line) of your pet.  They will feel it no matter what.

Intention means a lot. If you maintain the thought, ‘I really want to help my pet’, then you will.  If anything at all, your pet will feel totally loved by your intention. You don’t have to place your hands in any specific place – you can send energy healing while patting your pet in the way you normally would.

You can also slowly move your hands down the back of your pet, and when your hands feel energetically heavy, stop there. Breathe deeply, send all of your love there, and wait until the heaviness is gone.  Continue to move your hands along and find any other ‘heavy’ areas and just send your love there.  Your pet may fall asleep and/or meditate in their own way.

Where To Focus Reiki For Pets

Reiki is predominately used around Chakra points. Every living thing, including your pet, has them. They are:

The Crown – located at the top of your head.

Third Eye – located at centre brow.

Throat – located at centre of the throat

Heart – located at heart.

Solar Plexus – located at stomach.

Sacral – located at pelvic region.

Root – located at the very base of your spine.

Reiki For Pets – The Benefits

The benefits of Reiki for your pet may not always be obvious, but they are vast. They include feeling better energetically, emotionally and physically, as well as having more bounce in their step.

We cannot say that Reiki for your pet can fix anything per se, but it can benefit in many ways such as:

  • Easing pain.
  • Boosting immune system.
  • Help with healing time after surgery, illness, etc.
  • Can help with the removal emotional ‘blocks’.
  • Reduce anxiety and stress levels.
  • Can bring in a meditative state.
  • Calms the nervous system.
If you would like to really spoil your pet with love and energy here is a specific sequence to follow.

Your pet will love you for this attention and intention.

1. Shoulders

Place your hands on your pet’s shoulders.  Hands can be side by side, depending on the position of how they are laying, or you can use just one hand – it is all about intention.

2. Mid Belly or Mid Back

This all depends on whether your pet is laying down or standing.  Hands either side by side or you could have one hand on mid back and one hand on mid belly.

3. Lower Back Area

Place hands side by side on lower back. Reiki energy has a mind of its own, so it will go where needed.
