Why should the fun, confidence, and vibrance of the season be reserved for the under-30s? Fitness Expert Nikki Ellis says it’s time for women over 40 to reclaim their power, their joy, and their Summer. With fresh tips on how to make this your best season yet, Nikki’s guide is here to help you rewrite the rules of Hot Girl Summer for the mid-life ladies!
For too long, the idea of “hot girl Summer” has been monopolised by youth culture, but guess what? Middle-aged women are reclaiming the narrative, and it’s about time. Welcome to your Hot Mid Life Girl Summer – a season of unapologetic self-expression, empowerment, and joy. Forget societal expectations or outdated notions about ageing; this Summer is about YOU.
Inspired by countless celebrities reclaiming the mid-life narrative, from Halle Berry, Gwen Stefani to Jennifer Anniston and a top rating episode on my podcast (Find Your Fierce with Nikki Ellis), here’s a guide to fully embracing this mindset and making this Summer one for the books.
Step 1: Redefine “Hot” on your terms
Being “hot” isn’t about size, age, or Instagram filters. It’s about confidence, energy, and how you carry yourself. In your 40s, 50s, or beyond, you’ve earned the right to define what makes you feel sexy and powerful.
For some, it’s a bold red lip or wearing that bikini without a second thought. For others, it’s rocking a sundress while striding into a room like you own it. Whatever it is, let it reflect the person you’ve grown into – not who society expects you to be.
Step 2: Prioritise saying yes
This Summer is all about saying “yes” to what lights you up. That could mean booking the dream holiday you’ve been putting off, saying “no” to obligations that drain you, commitments you simply don’t want or need to do, or simply taking an afternoon to read a book in the shade.
Think about the things that bring you joy and lean into them unapologetically. It’s your time to put yourself first, guilt-free.
Step 3: Move for joy and find your tribe
Let’s get one thing straight: movement should feel good, not like a chore. Whether it’s beach yoga, dancing in your kitchen, or walking in nature, find ways to move that make you feel alive. Always include strength training (lifting weights) as a midlife Goddess to stay strong in muscles and bone, do some higher intensity huffy puffy work and a bit of jump training (or vigorous dancing) and you will be living your best life – bonus points for finding a gym or studio filled with women just like you.
And if you want to challenge yourself? Go for it! But make sure your motivation comes from a place of self-love, not pressure to “fix” something about yourself. Exercise is about celebrating what your body can do, not punishing it.
Step 4: Curate a Summer wardrobe that sparks joy
Say goodbye to outdated rules about what you “should” or “shouldn’t” wear at a certain age. If you want to wear a crop top, wear the crop top. Feel like showing some leg? Go for it.
A Hot Mid Life Girl’s Summer wardrobe is about wearing what makes you feel good. Think flowy dresses, bold colors, and fabrics that make you want to twirl in the sunshine. Life’s too short for boring clothes. A bit stuck wardrobe wise? Why not book a session with a wardrobe consultant?
Step 5: Surround yourself with energy boosters
Whether it’s friends, family, or solo adventures, prioritise people and activities that fill your cup. Spend time with the ones who make you laugh until your sides hurt and who celebrate you for exactly who you are. If you are looking for more support (whether it’s a Virtual Assistant, Online Business Manager or Personal Trainer) look for someone who makes you feel great about yourself and your goals.
Equally important? Set boundaries with anyone who drains your energy or tries to dull your shine. A Hot Middle-Aged Woman’s Summer doesn’t have room for negativity. Some people are not meant to be with you your entire life – it’s OK to let go.
Step 6: Say yes to new adventures
Trying new things is a surefire way to reignite your spark. Maybe it’s a pottery class, paddleboarding for the first time, or finally learning how to make that fancy non-alcoholic mocktail you’ve always admired.
By stepping out of your comfort zone, you remind yourself of your own vitality and keep life exciting.
Step 7: Radiate self-love
Perhaps the most important ingredient for a Hot Mide Life Girl’s Summer is self-acceptance. This doesn’t mean you’ll wake up every day feeling 100% amazing – no one does. But it does mean choosing to treat yourself with kindness, ditching self-criticism, and embracing the beauty in your imperfections.
Self love also means doing all of those things to be your best personal health coach/ life manager. Do your weight training, have regular checkups with your health professional, get your blood checked, don’t put up with anything you are a bit worried about healthwise – go get it checked! Eat plenty of protein (generally 100g plus a day), walk every day, connect with people, eat your fibre – look after yourself
It’s about reminding yourself that you are worthy, exactly as you are, in this moment.
Embrace the season
A Hot Mid Life Girl Summer isn’t about looking a certain way or checking off a list of goals. It’s about how you feel – alive, vibrant, and unapologetically YOU. This summer, step into your power, let go of the rules, and embrace the joy of being a woman in your prime.
Because the truth is, the hottest thing about you isn’t your age or your outfit—it’s your confidence. And confidence? It’s ageless.
