Losing those excess kilos is considered the major benefit for many who undertake a detoxification program.

“I wish weight-loss wasn’t the association [with detoxing],” says Karina.
“When we fast that’s not necessarily the optimal way to approach weight-loss. Weight loss for health purposes is a fantastic goal but when we do it through calorie restriction then any weight lost during that is usually regained fairly soon after that when we return to a normal diet.
“It’s not sustainable and leads to yo-yo dieting, which is really not something that’s really healthy for the body, and it also makes it more difficult for the body to lose weight at the end.
“The body recognises it’s going into deprivation mode, and slows down the metabolism and holds onto the weight.”
