Meet The Aussie Grammy Star Who Hates Being Famous

But what does the humble 28-year-old who runs her own record label from her Melbourne home think of all the fuss?

Not too much, it seems.

When asked what she thought her chances were of winning the coveted prize that’s launched the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Alicia Keys, among others, Courtney deadpans, “Um, about one in five?”.

Courtney, who cleaned up at the ARIAs in 2015, is one of five category nominees on a big night for the Australian music industry, with Keith Urban and Perth band Tame Impala also up for gongs.

The Depreston singer is up against Meghan Trainor, Toril Kelly, Sam Hunt and favourite James Bay.

“I’m sure there are millions of other artists that I respect that have won Grammys, maybe. I don’t know, I’ve never followed the Grammys, I don’t know,” Courtney tells Billboard magazine.

“But it’s just nice to have that recognition on such a huge international scale.”

Courtney already has a following in the US, thanks to Ellen DeGeneres who invited her to perform Depreston in early 2015.

“I love her so much,” Ellen said on her daytime talk show, as she introduced Courtney’s performance below.

Courtney admits she was “pretty nervous” before appearing on Ellen.

“I thought I was going to forget the words to Depreston after I saw the First Lady doing a dance to a song,” Barnett said.

“I was pretty terrified.”

As for walking the red carpet at the Grammys, don’t expect to see Courtney in the best-dressed lists, she warns.

“Dressing up and wearing fancy clothes and stuff, we don’t really do that – it’ll be an interesting life experience.”
