Eddie Redmayne, who plays a transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, is in the running to repeat his 2015 success, competing against The Revenant star Leonardo DiCaprio for the best actor award.
DiCaprio has been nominated four times before but is yet to win an Academy Award.
Other contenders for best actor include Michael Fassbender for biopic Steve Jobs, Matt Damon for space saga The Martian and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, in which he portrays real-life Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
Australian actress Cate Blanchett is nominated for best actress for her role in Carol, veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling is up for the marital drama 45 Years, Brie Larson for Room, Jennifer Lawfrence for Joy and Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn.
Kate Winslet is up for best supporting actress in Steve Jobs whilst Golden Globe winner and sentimental favourite Sylvester Stallone is nominated for the supporting actor in Creed.
The George Miller film Mad Max: Fury Road’s ten nominations marks the biggest nod to Australian nominees at the Academy Awards since 2002 when Moulin Rouge! and Lord of the Rings saw 13 Australians nominated.
Here is a full list of nominations for the 2016 Academy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles in a ceremony hosted by Chris Rock on 28 February, 2016. (Monday February 29 Australian time).
