How to Create a Barbie Film-Inspired Bedroom for Adults

Our tiny house has two bedrooms and to be honest, I’ve been a little bored with the interior design and linen. So after watching the Barbie film, I decided it was time for a major house decorating revamp.

Watch the Barbie Dreamhouse History Tour

Barbie historian Whitney Mallett explained in Architectural Digest on YouTube how modern furniture and interior design inspired the Barbie Dreamhouse.

My house currently has greens, blues and some accent colours like pops of ruby red. I love to support local artists, especially at the markets. So if you walked in the front door, you would see many items of original artwork, my own paintings, and a couple of antique pieces from my grandparents’ house.

I love natural colours, white walls and clutter-free areas. But my husband often complains about tripping on papers and piles of books!

I don’t like McMansions houses, where they mix different styles in one house. I love the 1950s and 1960s classic design items. Our house is not a pink mansion!

Lately, I prefer to buy good quality and well-built items that will last a long time.

Watch the Barbie Dreamhouse Tour

Margot Robbie takes us on a tour of The Barbie Dreamhouse and talks about set design.

If you watch the tour of Barbie’s Dreamhouse on YouTube. You’ll get a sneak peek or reminder of what the film set design looks like.

Barbie’s bed is heart-shaped and has a custom-designed mattress (with a custom wooded base). She has decorated it with three round pink puffy throw pillows.

By the side of her bed, you might spot a pair of ultra-modern lamps with iridescent lampshades.

The bedspread is a little impractical with a square sequin top. You’ll need to have one of these custom handmade. Think Etsy or Ebay. Another alternative would be to measure and buy a large piece of silver holographic fabric from a sewing shop like Spotlight or Lincraft.

But it won’t be comfortable to sit on top of! Underneath the bed sheets are pale or dusty pink.

Barbie doesn’t have many items of furniture in her bedroom. Above the heart-shaped bed is a matching pink quilted bedhead. Nearby are two pink round wooden side tables.

I popped into my local Snooze shop and he chuckled when I asked if he had a heart-shaped mattress. Neither of us could find anything in stock!!!

At the end of this clip, Barbie steps on a custom rug (or carpet) and heads downstairs. Here we can see her bedroom also contains a pale pink sitting chair and a matching round ottoman.

Where to Buy Pink Linen

There are many places where you buy your bed linen. You can buy these online or in-store. I prefer to wait until they are on sale.

H&M have nailed their quilt covers. The modern ones have little pockets at the top where you put your hands to hold the quilt and shake it downwards.

I prefer to buy a quilt cover with matching pillows and a couple of spares. I generally don’t bother with single sheets. But, I am fussy about the mattress cover sheet. I hate putting them on.

I have bought long-lasting bedsheets from Sheridan, H&M and my local Pillow Talk.

I’m lusting after the round-throw pillows from Kip and Co. Do you remember the Australian artist Ken Done from the 80s? You can save money with their bed bundle.

I sometimes buy pillows and sheets from Target Australia. Unfortunately, the more money you spend the longer they will last. So white sheets and linen are always a good starting point. Hemp is a sustainable product.

If you’re on a budget, second-hand shops are a good option. You might also find something at your local TK Maxx Australia, IKEA or even a larger grocery store.

What to Wear to Bed

I like to wear natural fibres to bed. Think cotton, linen, hemp and organic materials. As a full-time writer, I prefer to buy anything easy to wash in a washing machine.

Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) jumps out of bed wearing a matching satin pink pyjama set and pink pom pom-topped kitten heels. Think of solid bold colours.

You might find similar items at Peter Alexander Sleepwear or something comfy from Cotton On.

You’ll want to place a pink mulberry eye mask, next to your favourite book.

How to Hide Your Fabulous Clothes

The Barbie wardrobe, of course, is to die for. It is designed so that you can see all the options easily. You might not have space to hang all your fashion items on the wall.

So again, go back to real-life examples on YouTube or your favourite interior decorating show on a streaming service like Netflix or Binge.

But what does Ken’s Bedroom Look Like?

Ryan Gosling talks about things he can’t live without.

In the Barbie film, Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) admits that the Ken rule is to “put three things on.”

You might like to have black lighting wallpaper or paint your bedroom walls a pale or modern blue. If you’re going for a more outrageous look, then feel free to go with 100 per cent gold glitter. You can order custom wallpaper from your favourite local artist on Spoonflower.

Or just pop into a local interior decorating shop.

Hilarious Barbie Interview with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling

Ken pretends to be interested in horses. So he goes through a little country western phase. Bless, we’ve all been there! (You might want to watch Yellowstone on streaming for a more authentic look).

Ken has several interests. So he decorates his house with his surfboard, rollerblades, and fitness products. All to attract the right women!

He’s a bit cheeky when he reveals that Ken wears white boxer shorts, with his name on them!!!

If you’re a bachelor, you do not want to ask your mum to help you decorate your bedroom. When you’re feeling brave, just ask a female friend (around your age)… who dresses well for advice.

Seduce Your Ken into the Bedroom

Perhaps Barbie and Ken are not the best role models when it comes to seducing your partner in the bedroom!

You might need to ask Ken to take off his faux Minx coat. Although, Ken has some good practical advice. Like giving positive compliments and carrying your Barbies’ essential items in a bag for her.

If you’re still not sure how to decorate your bedroom. Just have a look at some videos on TikTok or Instagram. #barbiecore

The Ending

When watching the film, you’ll need to remember that although it is a kid’s film… It’s often what’s not said, that’s funny. It’s packed with subtext and clever innuendos.

I hope you enjoyed watching Barbie as much as my friends did.
