There is something magical about receiving a hamper. It’s the fact that you get this fabulous experience of being surprised and delighted as you discover what’s inside.
When I lived in London, I would traditionally send family and friends a Christmas hamper from a delightful tea team room called Betty’s in Harrogate, Yorkshire. It was always full of delicious goodies from home-made fruit cakes, shortbread biscuits, chocolates, aromatic tea selections and English preserves. Knowing that these artistically-packed hampers would be be greeted with enormous joy made me feel good because, if I’m honest, it was exactly the type of present I’d love to receive myself. And, ever since, I’ve been a fan of sending hampers as a gift.
I even recall the goodwill my former boss Kerry Packer got from his famous tradition of giving everyone in his staff a Christmas hamper. It came in a huge cardboard box and was full to the brim with everything from a leg of ham to the Christmas cake. People actually wanted to join the company – Australian Consolidated Press – just to get the hamper.
Fortunately, this time honoured tradition hasn’t gone away, and there is a myriad of fabulous hampers available. There are cheese and wine hampers, Moet and Gourmet Nibbles hampers, and even make-over beauty gift hampers. But my favourite one is called Snowgoose. They’ve been around for about 20 years and they support Australian growers with their home delivery service of fruit and vegetables. More recently, they started to provide milk, juice and eggs to the delivery. Now, fresh eggs from a local farmer is a winner.
Check out the wonderful assortment of artisan-style food and fresh fruit and vegetables below that I recently sampled. The great part of the experience is discovering some of the new products such as the Caramelised onion and marinated goat cheese.
You see, it’s dawned on me that hampers don’t have to be something you send to someone else, you can also surprise and delight yourself by placing an order for that other special person in your life – yourself!
Snowgoose delivers fresh fruit and vegetables to Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney metro locations. A regular box is $49 and the large box is $69 and the produce looks like it’s jumped straight from the pages of Australian Gourmet magazine. Or rather was specially hand picked from the local farmers themselves.
Vibrant fresh produce tastes even more yummy knowing that by buying these hampers you are also supporting our wonderful rural community during these tough times.
Added to this is the fact that amping up on your fruit and vegetables quota is certainly what the doctor ordered especially during this time of self-isolating because the healthier we are the stronger our immune system and the better we can resist germs.
So say hello to more health-boosting flavonoids and antioxidants in your diet and stay healthy at home cooking well-balanced foods from the fruits of the earth.
