Clooney and his new wife, human rights lawyer Amal Almuddin, had been the subject of a cheeky monologue by awards co-host Tina Fey earlier in the evening, but when the 53 year old took the stage to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement – the boozed-up audience was wooed into silence.

The Oscar-winning actor, humanitarian, filmmaker and long-time famous bachelor, generously opened up about finding love with wife Amal. In a few simple, heart-felt words, he delivered a heartwarming reminder to us all that age is no barrier to finding your great love.

Gazing lovingly, and ever-so sheepishly into the audience in Amal’s direction, George said; “I’ve had a pretty good year myself. Listen, It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love—even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life. And when your whole life is 53 years, Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.”

After capturing hearts and attentions around the world, Clooney dedicated the last part of his moving speech to the unity marches in Paris and beyond in solidarity with the slain free-speech crusaders at Charlie Hedbo.  Sporting the same tux that he wore to his wedding in Italy last year, Clooney’s lapel was decorated with a “Je Suis Charlie” badge as he said:

quote-1“And one last thing: To reiterate what we’ve all been talking about, today was an extraordinary day,” said Clooney. “There were millions of people who marched not just in Paris, but around the world. And they were Christians and Jews and Muslims. They were leaders of countries all over the world. And they didn’t march in protest; they marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear. We won’t do it. So, Je Suis Charlie. Thank you.”
