The Year Of The Sneaker

Never before have we in the fashion industry been so … comfortable.

First we stepped down from the seven inch platforms into a regular four-inch stiletto (which felt positively dreamy), but designers went further still. Next was the low heel – block and kitten. Enough to make us push our higher heels to the back of the wardrobe for daily escapades. Then there were flats. Not pretty, in fact, they could be slotted into a very bizarre trend category I like to call Ugly Chic. Think the fur trimmed slides and patent leather, chunky soled things that have been flying out of the shops.

Now? Well, there’s only one more step to go to from here: the sneaker.

Not even a wedge sneaker which have had me extolling their virtues for the past three years.

Nope, these are actual flat sneakers now being designed to within an inch of their leather soled life, seen on everyone from Beyonce to Natalie Portman.  They’re a thing. A big thing. And aren’t we pleased about it!

Not just for the gym, the new sneaker should be teamed with luxe items that will complete your dressed down look. Either enormous, chunky Nikes or a pared-down, espadrill-inspired trainer work this season.

Wear them with: Leather leggings, skinny jeans, leather shorts and sequin mini skirts to really up the ante and take your look cool-bound.
