Australia’s night of nights was everything we expected: glitzy, glamorous and full of red carpet triumphs. Yes, you heard right: triumphs. While the Logies have traditionally been a hotspot for bad style decisions, it seems the cream of Australia’s television crop have come good in the fashion stakes.

In fact, it was hard to pick a best dressed! But if we had to it would come down to Jennifer Hawkins (the woman is so flawless it hurts) and Jessica Marais. And then if we were being picky about it – and let’s face it, we are – then Jessica Marais’ shoes have let her down and we have to give the prize to Jen Hawkins. Jessica teamed her stunning, sparkly dress with matte grey pumps that had a white platform. I can’t express how awful they look with this beauty of a dress! All she needed was a strappy silver heel and she would have streaked ahead as the winner.

The Top Trends from the red carpet

1. Sheer fabric

We’ve seen sheer all over the catwalks and it was out in full force last night. From Asher Keddie’s sheer sleeves to Rebecca Judd’s sheer pleated skirt, there were a number of interpretations of the trend. Best in show had to go to Emma Lung’s spotty sheer dress over lacy underwear. Sublime.

2. Lace

You couldn’t turn your head without running into another celebrity in a lace frock, cementing its position as a top trend of the season. And it flattered everyone. From Shelley Craft and Rebecca Gibney’s looks which partly covered their dresses in lace, to the whole-body effect of Sonia Kruger in red and Natalie Gruzlewski in black, lace was the clear winner on the red carpet.

3. Shimmer

It’s an awards night. It would be difficult to avoid a shimmering bead or two. Kylie did it best in a strapless, nude creation that looked moved beautifully as she walked, and Paula Abdul brought the glimmer with her all the way from LA.

4. One shoulder

Assymetrical necklines and hemlines are here to stay. They add drama and theatre to an event that is all about, well, drama and theatre. Big winners in the one-shoulder category were Kat Stewart, Kate Ritchie and Natalie Bassingthwaite. Just glorious, all three of them.

5. Off-the-shoulder

Straight off the catwalks comes the off-the-shoulder trend, and it’s no coincidence that the two best dressed contenders of the evening, Jennifer Hawkins and Jessica Marais, both had off-the-shoulder necklines. Shoulders are sexy, full stop, and getting both of them out? Well you can’t really go wrong.

6. White

If there was a winning colour of the night, white was it, with Jen Hawkins, Claudia Karvan, Lauren Phillips and Jesinta Campbell all fronting up in white. Some did it better than others though, with Jesinta Campbell taking the back seat on this one. Her long sleeves and swaying skirt were too heavy for the red carpet and she seemed to be swallowed by them.

Worst Trend

I don’t know what it was in the water, but most celebrities were let down by their shoes. Most of them just didn’t make good style sense and their choices were confusing to say the least.

Dannii Minogue wore a stunning dress but finished it off with clumpy platforms.

Jessica Marais unbelievably teamed her beautiful dress with matte grey shoes that would really only work with jeans.

Natalie Bassingthwaite wore nude pointy heels and I can understand the reasoning here, but she still would have looked better with a strappy heel.

Lauren Phillips teamed her beautiful white dress with ankle strap, black pointy shoes.
