Although officially the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual blockbuster show, for the rest of the world the Met Gala in New York is all about the chance to gawk at celebrities in their finest.
Officially this year’s theme at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is Comme Des Garcons, honouring the work of esteemed Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, but out on the red carpet, the stars were jostling to steal the show.
Kendall Jenner paid homage with perhaps the most daring costume of the evening, a dress with a huge cut-out across her chest and stomach, and thigh-high split.
From the back, the dress was completely sheer except for her black G-string, designed by luxe lingerie label La Perla and “made from one piece of string”.
“It’s pretty sexual but, yeah, it’s cool. It’s like, it’s very like, I don’t know. I always like something that’s a little controversial so, that’s kind of that,” Kendall tells Teen Vogue.
Not to be outdone, younger sister Kylie arrived at the US$30,000-a seat event in a Versace gown dripping with embellishments.
The reality star, 19, showed off her famous figure in the see-through number over a high-cut bodysuit.
The semi-sheer nude-color outfit gave the appearance of a fishing net studded with sea shells and long tassels fell from each shoulder.
Katy Perry also made an impression at the ‘Oscars of the East Coast’ with a completely different take on the ‘Avant Garde’ theme.
The singer, 32, who is also co-chair, wore a stunning blood-red custom-made Maison Margiela Artisanal dress designed by John Galliano.
It featured a mirrored head piece with illegible writing, apparently spelling out the word “witness”, stitched across her forehead.
She teamed the dramatic look with red lips, peroxide blonde hair, a silver headpiece … and red boots.
