Lips, Lips, Lips:
A lipstick change your look dramatically, but it can also take ten years off (yes, really), as Rae tells us which hue to laden your lips with.
“Rose coloured lipstick is amazing – it’s youthful, very flattering and also makes your teeth appear whiter!” quips Morris. “A rose or wine coloured lip stick will suit all skin tones and is my personal favourite. Try Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Rose Tweed.”
Cut Out The Contour:
Despite the current cult of contouring, Morris argues against the case for those at the other end of the age spectrum.
“Don’t contour if you’re an older woman”, says Rae. “As we age we tend to get hollow under our cheeks and temples and contouring will just enhance this.”
Ditch Your Old Habits:
Often it’s hard to let go, but it’s time to relinquish those routines of old and give the trends that should be kept to the Gen X/Z gals the old-heave-ho.
“Women of a certain age have to ditch glittery lip-glosses, and in fact any products that contain glitter in general, it isn’t age appropriate anymore. The same goes for bright or fluoro colours!” says Morris.
“If fine lines are a concern, keep all your eyeshades matte. Remember, ‘Shimmer will enhance lines‘. Matte diminishes them and will make you look years younger.”
Keep it Simple:
A minimalist maquillage is best, notes Rae. Heed to the mantra of ‘less is more’, so tone down the OTT vibes and opt for a more natural guise.
“I also believe that it comes down to keeping makeup simple, it’s much more appealing and age appropriate, while being sophisticated. When you hit a certain age there are particular products that should be applied more often such as sunscreen as it will help avoid fine lines and wrinkles. Try La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Ultra Light 50 mL $27.99.”
No More All Day Makeup!
Maintenance is key to a youthful complexion, so pack your Prada with a compact mirror and get ready for timely touch-ups.
“All day makeup can actually make you look older”, says Rae. “To maintain a fresh faced look throughout the day the trick is to continuously re-apply your makeup, this requires a nice dewy liquid foundation like L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Light Infusing Foundation 30 mL $33.95. I would advise steering clear of heavy powders, they tend to lock in fine lines which end up looking like wrinkles!”
