Sony Photography Awards: The Best Of Australian And New Zealand Photography

Everyone loves brilliant photography and it’s great to Sony continue to support the best of Australian and New Zealand photography with The Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 Sony Alpha Awards.

Showcasing great shots taken with the Sony Alpha camera range, the judges had a tough job having to choose from more than 5,000 stunning images from both professional and amateur photographers.

The winners were selected by Sony Global Digital Imaging Ambassadors and professional Australian photographers, Craig Parry and Mark Galer. Each category winner received $2,000 worth of Sony camera gear, and the Grand Prize Winner, Ilan Wittenberg, received a  trip to Tanzania with World Photo Adventures, plus $3,000 of Sony Alpha gear.

“Over the past two years of the Sony Alpha Awards we’ve seen an incredibly high calibre of entries, and this year has been no exception, with photographers from all walks of life sharing amazing photographs,” said Craig Parry and Mark Galer. “It’s an honour to see first hand, the dedication and passion of our local Australian and New Zealand photographers.”

The category winners for the 2018 Sony Alpha Awards were:

● Abstract: Jingshu Zhu

● Editorial: David Sickerdick

● Landscape: Grant Galbraith

● Macro: Chris Cope

● Nature: Robyn Waterhouse

● Portrait: Ilan Wittenberg (Grand Prize Winner)

● Sport: Kian Bullock

Ambassador and Travel Photographer, Tyson Mayr chose the overall winner this evening, 17-year-old Keeley Watson from Auckland.

Tyson said, “It was extremely tough to choose the overall winner as both of the finalists’ photos were amazing, particularly as they only had two hours to capture a winning image. I admire both of them for taking on the challenge and encourage them to continue on their photography journey.”
