Makeup Brushes: Why And How To Use Them

When it comes to makeup brushes, there are so many, it’s a mindfield deciding which one to use and when. From a bronzing brush to a stippling brush to a eye contourer, how do you know which one to pick!?

Thankfully, celebrity makeup artist Liz Kelsh, who does makeup for the likes of Nicole Kidman, has just released a new fantastic range of makeup brushes and they all come with top tips of how and when to use them. Which for people like me is a godsend.

According to Liz, the importance of blending is crucial to a great makeup look. “Blending makes sure you can’t see when something starts and something finishes,” she explained. “Contouring should not be a line on the face, it should be an illusion.”

Here at The Carousel HQ, we were lucky enough to catch up with Liz and ask her about some of her top brush tips.

The foundation brush is fantastic for applying liquid or cream foundation.

What is the difference between the contouring shadow brush and the blending brush?

The contouring brush is shaped to make contouring effortless. While the long hairs of the eye blending brush bring polish to every eye makeup.

How would you advise someone to use a stippling brush if they’ve never used one before?

Stippling brushes are fantastic for cream blush and super easy to use as the brush does all the work for you.

Why is a good brush important to help perfect your makeup?

I’m a believer you just need a few key good quality brushes to take your make up to a professional level. Great brushes will allow for masterful blending and pinpoint precision where needed.

Any extra tips?

If you’re new to brushes I highly recommend the eye blending brush and the smudge brush be your first purchase!

Eye Blending Brush

The best thing about the new range of makeup brushes is that it has easy to follow step by step guides and diagrams on the back of the packaging. My personal favourite is the stippling brush, I used the long ended bristles, like advised by the tips on the package, to sweep a light coating of powder under my eyes after I had applied my concealer. I then used the shorter end bristles to smudge and blend my cream blusher. The longer bristle ends gave me a light coating of powder so I didn’t get a cakey under eye look and the shorter bristles made it easy to blend and apply my cream blush onto my cheeks. The great thing about the stippling brush is that it can be used for multiple purposes.

Another top makeup tip from Liz is always make sure you apply your makeup in bright daylight or a very well lit mirror.

The Liz Kelsh Manicare Brush Range will be available at Priceline, Myer, Target and Big W nationally on April 1.
