Generally speaking, we remain in denial that Christmas is around the corner. (Our suggestions for last-minute gift guides are on their way – we promise!) In the meantime, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the annual tradition that is Mecca’s National Gallery of Victoria artist collaboration.

Since 2015, Australia’s largest prestige beauty retailer has intertwined its passion for perfumes with artistic projects – and paired them both with a dedication to empowering women and fostering emerging talent.
Each holiday season, Mecca highlights the work of a female artist, contributing to the acquisition of one of her pieces for display at the National Gallery of Victoria. This featured artwork then becomes the inspiration for Mecca’s highly anticipated holiday packaging, blending artistry with the spirit of giving.

For Christmas 2024 the Mecca x NGV x Natalya Hughes collaboration brings together rich colours, layered textures, and festive opulence – with Hughes’ designs ensuring this year’s collection feels like an indulgent and celebratory experience.  So, it’s time to deck the halls with beauty, embrace creativity, and make spirits (and cheekbones) shine bright!

All about artist Natalya Hughes

Natalya Hughes is a celebrated artist, educator, and mother based in Queensland. Known for her masterful use of rich embellishments, Hughes embraces ornamental traditions that capture beauty in its most intricate and vivid forms. Her artwork invites us into a world of colour, joy, and adornment, making her an ideal partner for Mecca’s 2024 Holiday Collection.

Beyond collaborating with Mecca, Hughes has featured her work in major institutions like the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, and the Art Gallery of NSW. Additionally, as part of the celebration, Mecca has supported the acquisition of one of Hughes’ major pieces for The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia in Federation Square. This work adds vibrancy and meaning to the NGV’s collection, while , while simultaneously reinforcing Mecca’s dedication to supporting Australian artists and elevating female creatives. Hughes’ approach to art is all about decoration. “To decorate is to adorn, to embellish, and to embolden,” she says. And, this ethos shines through in her designs for Mecca’s festive offerings.
