His Majesty King Charles’ Coronation: Everything You Need to Know

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Coronation of His Majesty King Charles

What date is King Charles’ Coronation?

The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will take place on Saturday 6th May 2023. The service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey. During the ceremony, the Sovereign takes the coronation oath and is crowned.

Beforehand, there will be a procession from Buckingham Palace known as ‘The King’s Procession.’ After the ceremony, there will be a larger ceremonial procession returning to Buckingham Palace, known as ‘The Coronation Procession’.

The ceremonial events will conclude with the couple and Members of the Royal Family appearing on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Tell me about The King’s Crown

Charles will be crowned with the St Edward’s Crown. The crown is made with a solid gold frame making it heavy to wear at 2.23kg. It is set with priceless rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnet, topazes, and tourmalines. It has four crosses-pattée and four fleurs-de-lis, and two arches. To finish, the crown has a purple velvet cap with an ermine band (fur of a short-tailed weasel).

Did you know St Edward’s Crown was worn by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at her Coronation in 1953?

Tell me about the Coronation Emblem

The Coronation Emblem pays tribute to The King’s love of the natural world. The design includes the flora and flora of the four nations in red around a blue St Edward’s Crown. See if you can spot the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales, and the shamrock of Northern Ireland.

The Coronation Weekend: What’s On?

To celebrate The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort there will be ample events held around The United Kingdom for the Coronation Weekend. These include a concert, a community lunch, and charity events.

On Sunday 7th May 2023, a special Coronation Concert will be staged and broadcast live at Windsor Castle by the BBC and BBC Studios, and broadcast globally.

Neighbours and community groups are invited to share food and fun together for The Coronation Big Lunch also on Sunday 7th May 2023. The Big Lunch website has editable invitations, posters, recipes, and activity ideas.
