Born in 1947 as David Robert Jones, Bowie released his breakthrough album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars in 1972. The record debuted his androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, who was a fusion of rock star and space alien.

The death occurred only three days after both Bowie’s 69th birthday and the release of his latest album, Blackstar. Producer Tony Visconti said that Blackstar was a “parting gift”, as the singer was aware that his cancer was incurable. The film clip Lazarus has taken on new meaning in the context of his death, he is depicted in a hospital bed singing: “I’m in heaven.”

Fellow British musician Sir Paul McCartney posted this message on his personal website.

“Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world.

“I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever.”

Bruce Springsteen posted this to his Facebook page.

“Over here on E Street, we’re feeling the great loss of David Bowie. David was a visionary artist and an early supporter of our music. Always changing and ahead of the curve, he was an artist whose excellence you aspired to. He will be sorely missed.”

Numerous other public figures, celebrities and music fans have come forward with outpouring of grief and sympathies for his family. Similarly, memorials for the rocker have been constructed all over America and Europe.

The stars signature appearance of his eyes is due to a condition called anisocoria, not heterochromia, as many people believe.

David Bowies legacy is his music and family, but he will be sorely missed.

“There’s a starman waiting in the sky.” Starman, David Bowie.
