Australia Wins Big At The BAFTA Awards

Homegrown box office smash Mad Max: Fury Road picked up four awards from its seven nominations.

Lesley Vanderwalt and Damina Martin won for makeup and hair, Jenny Beavan for costume design, Margaret Sixel for editing, and Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson for production design. Mad Max has a further 10 nominations at the Oscars in Los Angeles on February 29 – including Cate again for her role in Carol – making it the most nominated Australian film of all time. Meanwhile, the weather may have been icy outside the Royal Opera House for the BAFTA’s, but the red carpet was red hot with a slew of Hollywood and European stars on show.

Cate, 46, wowed in a black Alexander McQueen gown with a floral top section and small cut-out pieces running throughout.

The red carpet favourite completed her stunning look with her blonde locks swept into a side-parted chignon and a dazzling pair of silver earrings.

The bottom section of her outfit had beautiful feathers running throughout as she posed for pictures.

Julianne Moore, 55, also turned heads in a curve-hugging cream gown with a black halter-style neckline. The stunning Alicia Vikander, 27, braved the cold wearing a floor-length black leather Louis Vuitton gown with an encrusted chain mail patter that ebbed into a tinsel-like design. The Danish Girl and Ex Machina star, partner of Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), wore her hair to one side to show off a stunning five-stone drop-earring. Inside the auditorium, there was also plenty of steam on Valentine’s Day night in the UK. Leonardo DiCaprio stunned attendees by planting a huge kiss on Dame Maggie Smith.

As the camera turned on them for the playful ‘Kiss Cam’ section the The Revenant star, 41, did not hold back.

It turned out to be a good omen too for almost everyone connected with the hit survival drama. Leonardo won Best Actor, buoying hopes of a first Oscar gong in a fortnight, Alejandro G. Inarritu won for Best Director and The Revenant also won for Best Film.
