Alanis Morissette’s Funny ‘Ironic’ Reboot For The Internet Age

These are just a few of the hilarious lines in Alanis Morissette’s Internet-friendly parody of her hit song Ironic on The Late Late Show with host James Corden.

Nothing is off-limits in the 2015 reboot to promote the 20th anniversary re-release of her chart-topping Jagged Little Pill album – including herself.

Alanis and host James have fun updating her hit song for a new generation.

“It’s singing ironic but here are no ironies,” sings Alanis, addressing the long-standing gripe that the original song does actually illustrate ironic situations.

The devout feminist also takes aim at the dearth of female television hosts with “It’s ten thousand male late-night hosts when all you want is just one woman, seriously.”

A lot has changed for Alanis, now 41, since her groundbreaking 1995 album. She also married rapper Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway in May, 2010, and became a mum for the first time with the arrival of their son Ever, born in December the same year.

But Alanis says she’ll always feel a deep connection to the album that also spawned the hits You Oughta Know and Hand In My Pocket, among others, and paved the way for a succession of followers.

“It’s definitely a different lifetime now for me, yet there is a thread of continuity that’s remained the same,” she says.

“There’s a value system and a fire that remains. A lot of people were labeling it [A Jagged Little Pill] as angry but really it was an explosion from having been repressed for so long and always being the people-pleaser.

“As a woman and as a feminist at the time and, still now, if there were to be one horrifying label that’s going to be stuck on me I’ll take angry because it’s so lovely, it’s such a powerful force, not the destructive version, but the one that inspires action.”
