An emotional Adele couldn’t stop the tears flowing in London as she accepted gongs for Best Album, Best Female, Best Single and a Global Success award.
“To come back after so long away and be so warmly received means so much,” said the Hello singer.
The star, who closed the show by performing When We Were Young, now matches the 1995 record set by Blur for the most number of Brit Awards in single night.
Increasingly overwhelmed with the adulation as the night wore on, at one point she was forced to apologise for swearing and for her “ugly cry face”.
Her most emotional moment came when she accepted the Global Success prize from British astronaut, Major Tim Peake, who was broadcasting from the International Space Station.
“Not bad for a girl from Tottenham, who is scared of flying,” was Adele’s reaction to the accolade.
Surprisingly, Adele admits she wasn’t expecting an acknowledgement for her worldwide chart-topper Hello as Best Single.
Adele’s Brits domination comes just weeks after her Grammys performance of All I Ask was marred by sound problems.
The singer publicly laughed it off in the immediate aftermath but later admitted that she spent much of the next day crying.
Her hit comeback album 21 wasn’t eligible for awards at the Grammys because she released it after the deadline for awards.
Other highlights inside the London auditorium included a show-stopping David Bowie tribute by Kiwi singer Lorde, who performed with the Rock God’s former tour band.
Meanwhile, out on the star-studded O2 red carpet most of the attention centred around our won Kylie Minogue and her new fiancé Joshua Sasse, Adele and Rihanna.
Rihanna, who was at the awards to perform her latest single Work, brought some serious A-list glamour to the event in a slinky purple Armani Prive dress teamed with dazzling Asprey jewels.
Head-over-heels in love Kylie, 47, dazzled in her flirty-cum-gothic inspired black dress, complete with a semi-sheer black and nude corset and a full prom-style skirt in a heavy lace.
