For the very first time, Australia took part in the launch of The United Nation’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED), a day that brings together the world’s largest celebration of women innovators and job creators aiming to support and empower women entrepreneurs worldwide.
Australian entrepreneurs Sonya Karras and Sacha Kaluri, successful speakers and founders of The Australian Teenage Expo, have been awarded the prestigious title of Australian representatives for WED 2014, and are now set to take the celebration to women right across the country.
To mark the global launch of WED, some of Australia’s most influential women leaders banded together this week to climb an Australian icon, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Joining Sonya and Sacha was a swag of successful Australian women including Karen Lawson (CEO Career One), Elise Strachan (My Cupcake Addiction) and Lyndey Milan (Chef, Author and TV Personality) and Robyn Foyster (CEO of TheCarousel.com), who all stood united at the very top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a way of empowering women right across the country.
WED pledges to encourage, celebrate and support women in business, whilst simultaneously building a strong network for change worldwide. In the USA, incredible women including Mama Sarah Obama (President Obama’s grandmother), Amy Robach (Good Morning America) and Sandy Lemer (Co-Founder Cisco Systems/Founder Urban Decay) took part in celebrations in New York.
CEO and Founder of WED, Wendy Diamond says the initiative is to celebrate the unwavering positives that women entrepreneurs bring to the global economy, as well as inspire and support future generations.
Both Sonya and Sacha were natural choices for the role of Australian representatives -now in its fourth year- having single handily created and funded the Australian Teenage Expo, the first expo of its kind in Australia, designed to support, encourage and inspire teenagers.
As passionate advocates for women in business and the youth of Australia, Sonya and Sacha aspire to raise awareness to the 250 million women and girls living in poverty by inspiring and encouraging them to follow their ambitions and dreams.
Our very own Robyn Foyster who said, “Climbing the Harbour Bridge with an inspirational group of women to celebrate 2014 UN Entrepreneurship Day was a huge privilege,” says Robyn, “and the climb itself is a metaphor for how much women can achieve through hard work and passion.”
