From playful, colourful tones, to pops of patterns and luxurious accessories, Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist, Rachell Mudie, has five simple and cost effective tips to help shake up your 2016 home style.
1. Use luxurious towels as a design element
“Give your bathroom a touch of day-spa style by displaying your towels rolled up in a wicker basket,” suggests Rachell.
“This look works well with any coloured towel, but if you’re going for that luxurious feel, plush white cotton towels will give the best effect.
“Rolling your towels will not only keep them easily accessible when you step out of the shower, but it’s also a space-saving technique.” This means more room for your beauty gear. Bonus!
2. Add a pop of brilliant turquoise
“Bring the coastal feel into your home by introducing a few turquoise accents,” says Rachell. “These vibrant, gem-like shades will continue to be popular in fashion, artwork, feature walls and decorative accessories this year, so there’s never been a better time to try it out!
“Turquoise is a colour that suits a number of different styles of home, especially coastal, nautical and Mediterranean.” Dip your toes into the trend with a few decoartive cushions, a vase or a throw for a colour pop, or make a splash with a full feature wall.
3. Use patterns to break up blocks of colour
“Last year saw patterns take over interior design and we’re seeing no sign of this trend slowing down,” explains Rachell. “If you like striking prints and patterns, this is your time to add beautiful, fun statement items when redecorating your home.
“Geometric patterns and prints are my favourite for this year; particularly a repeat chevron pattern or eye-catching shapes. If you’re not quite ready to try a pattern as a feature wall or floor tile, we suggest you experiment with something as simple as some accent cushions or a throw rug.”
4. Introduce an easy accent
“Throw cushions are a stylists’ go-to trick for adding a modern or tradition element to a space without making a major investment,” says Rachell. “Switch up your throw cushions until you find the right arrangement that suits your home, and have fun with patterns, colours, sizes and textures to give your living room or bedroom an affordable, fresh update.”
5. Change up your tea towels.
“When redecorating your home, don’t forget about the kitchen – after all, it is the hub of the home,” says Rachell. “Making your kitchen pop with personality and style is just as important as any other room in your home. And it doesn’t have to come with a costly price tag. The key is in the detail!
“The kitchen’s answer to a throw cushion is certainly the tea towel. Grab yourself a vibrant new tea towel set to instantly add colour and pattern to your stove. You can easily and affordably update them as the seasons change so you’re on trend all year round.”
