Navigating the social minefield of High Tea is tricky business. With High Tea at Doltone House Hyde Park fast approaching, here’s 5 do’s and don’ts to keep you in check with the upper echelon.

Some occasions we encounter prove the need for particular social protocols. It’s a matter of fact that high tea is no exception to this rule. Elegant, indulgent, and oh-so-traditional, it’s an event steeped in aristocratic flair. Paired with a penchant for convention, it’s also fussy. We get it – life is already a complicated whirlwind of overlapping rights and wrongs, leaving little time to contemplate the trappings of high tea etiquette.

It’s no wonder you’re experiencing some teatime anxiety. Luckily for you, the art of success lies in preparation. Rest easy in the knowledge of our five do’s and don’ts.

1. Do: Dress The Part

Although an elegant outing, high tea doesn’t necessarily call for high fashion. While you should ditch those old pair of trackie dacks, feel free to opt for something more polished. We’re thinking smart casual.

2. Don’t: Dunk Your Biscuits

By all means, reserve the right to dunk that biscuit in the comfort of your home. But in the high tea circuit, it’s considered a bit of a faux pas.

3. Do: Stir Correctly

The high tea connoisseur always stirs clockwise. When stirring, they’re also careful to avoid the dreaded clinks of spoon collisions with special china.

4. Don’t: Raise your Pinkie

Pinkies up? Not necessary. This common misconception of high tea etiquette it isn’t actually reccomended.  When it comes to fine china, poise that pinkie back into place.

5. Do: Pronounce Scone Properly

Pronounce this word the wrong way and you could run the risk of being instantly exposed as a fraud. Use ‘scon’, rather than ‘scone’.
