Architect Rob Mills’ Innovative Great Ocean Road Designs

Great Ocean Road

Acclaimed architect Rob Mills is putting innovative Australian design on the world stage, winning international accolades for two different projects – which both embrace the beauty of our unique natural environment.

Rob Mills Architecture’s Great Ocean Road Residence was announced the winner of the Los Angeles based BLT Built Design Awards Architectural Design – Residential category.

And Hampden by RMA won an honourable mention in the 2021 Architecture MasterPrize, among a record number of entries from around the world for the coveted awards.

Both add to an impressive list of awards for the Australian architect and designer.

Architect Rob Mills said he was thrilled and honoured by both awards.

“The measure of the awards is the quality of the other award-winners and the quality of each jury,” he said.

RMA’s world-leading designs draw from the unique qualities of the Aussie landscapes on which they are built, and harness natural light, air and space.

Great Ocean Road Residence was designed to withstand a harsh marine environment in its unique cliff-top position, while Mills has called Hampden by RMA – a limited collection of nine private three-bedroom residences in the coveted suburb of Armadale – one of his favourite projects in part because of its “intrinsic connection to location”.

The first sod has only just been turned on Hampden by RMA, yet three apartments have already been sold.

Buyers Lucy and Stephen Chipkin, who are moving from Sydney’s Woollahra to the exclusive Melbourne address, cannot wait to live in their new apartment.

“The apartment has been beautifully designed in the style of Rob Mills, whose work we have come to appreciate greatly,” Lucy said.

“Our home has a light and airy feel and generous living spaces. The detailing is outstanding.”

The awards put the Aussie-based RMA into a top international class, with fellow BLT Built Design Award winners including architectural icon Tadao Ando and stunningly beautiful projects such as the Dutch Charity Lotteries office building.

The Los Angeles-based BLT Built Design Awards are judged by an international jury panel of 40 experienced architects, designers, developers, academics and media representatives, and recognise the expertise of professionals involved in the realisation of outstanding projects, especially those who have gone above and beyond.

RMA’s Great Ocean Road Residence is a spectacular example of innovative, environmentally sensitive design which features fire-rated construction and geothermal heating – as well as solid construction which provides silence against the ocean winds. The interiors feature a mix of hard, warm and natural textures, with cantilevered ceilings and grand proportions.

Hampden by RMA was also selected by a jury after a rigorous judging process of thousands of exceptional entries across the globe, and will feature in the Architecture MasterPrize Book of Architecture, and the online 2021 Honorable Mentions Gallery.

The large-scale apartments have a 7-star energy rating and are designed to embrace natural light, with an abundance of greenery and best-practice principal of wellness embedded in its walls.

Rob Mills Architecture and Interiors has previously won the 2017 American Architecture Prize Firm of the Year Award in Residential Interior Design, along with an amazing four honourable mentions in the same awards.

RMA was recognised in both the architectural design and interior design categories for its Armadale Residence, and in commercial interiors for both One Hot Yoga & Pilates Sydney and One Hot Pilates Melbourne. RMA was previously also named Interior Practice of The Year at the 2016 World Interiors News Awards.
