From backyard BBQs to ice creams on the beach and bubbly drinks on roof top bars, the official festivities over summer may be over, but the feasting is not!

But, for those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the excitement of gatherings and festivities come with unique challenges. Here Lucy Casson, a healthcare professional specialising in diabetes care, shares her top three T1D tips for thriving during this celebratory time.

1. Adjust insulin doses for special treats

Summer festivities often mean indulging in foods and beverages that are out of the ordinary. Whether it’s a decadent dessert or a fruity cocktail, it’s important to plan ahead. Activities such as these can affect blood sugar levels, especially in warmer weather, which tends to amplify the body’s response to exercise. Lucy suggests reducing insulin doses when extra activity is on the cards to prevent hypoglycemia. Staying hydrated and monitoring blood sugar levels regularly can also make a big difference.

3. Embrace imperfection

While it’s natural to aim for stable blood sugar levels, Lucy reminds those with T1D not to strive for perfection during special occasions. (Hello, hard-to-keep New Year’s Resolutions!)

“Festivities are about connection and enjoyment,” she says. “If your blood glucose levels aren’t ideal, be kind to yourself. This season is meant to be celebrated.”

For people with T1D, balancing the joy of Summer festivities with health considerations may feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to dampen the fun. With thoughtful preparation and a flexible mindset, it’s possible to savor every bite, laugh, and dance move while staying in control.

So, as you head into the final stretch of Summer’s festivities, remember: It’s all about finding the sweet spot – figuratively and literally. Embrace the season, cherish the moments, and know that with these T1D tips having type 1 diabetes doesn’t mean missing out on the
