Jennifer Aniston… and Four Other Celebrities Who Swear by Infrared Workouts

Infrared workouts are taking the concept of “working up a sweat” literally. Here’s everything you need to know about the fitness routine that has wellness warriors swapping their swimming laps, for something a little hotter.

What are Infrared workouts?

Unlike traditional saunas or steam rooms, infrared heat is absorbed from the skin, generating heat from within. An infrared workout combines fitness with the added benefits that infrared heat offers. Including a more intense sweat session, at lower temperatures than a conventional heat source.

One of the pioneers bringing this movement to Australia is Joy in Movement, also known as J.I.M. All classes are heated to 40 degrees using state-of-the-art infrared technology to help create a detoxifying sweat. In addition, each class features the freshest DJ-produced mixes, where J.I.M guides and instructs you through every session. Each J.I.M class incorporates popular and effective exercise methods tailored with specific moves, including Pilates, Yoga, and Functional Training. According to founder Jarad Hobbs “these are designed to sculpt, stretch and tone your body in just 30 minutes.

“The idea was to help our members get more bang for their buck. In a shorter amount of time,” explains Jarad.

“Not everyone has a spare 60-90 minutes to travel to a gym and do a workout. By setting up our workouts in an infrared studio, members can get twice the benefits in half the time. Additionally, J.I.M studios have no mirrors. So, members can zone out and focus on how they feel rather than worry about how they look while getting a sweat on.”

Using Infrared workouts to improve your health

The benefits of infrared workouts extend beyond just burning calories. Proponents, such as Jarad claim that the deep, penetrating heat can help detoxify the body by promoting sweat, which carries toxins out through the skin. Additionally, the increased circulation from the heat can aid in muscle recovery and reduce inflammation, making it a popular choice among athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike.

Celebrities who sweat it out

There is no doubt that the benefits of an infrared sauna have been widely acknowledged by the likes of Jennifer Anniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez just to name a few. Many have shared it in their list of health tips and most even own their own.

While those with their own sauna may often do some Pilates and stretching while in there, LA has seen a bunch of infrared workouts pop up in recent years. All with an impressive celebrity clientele list. The good news for Aussies who can’t make it to Hollywood? While J.I.M only has three studios so far, they are looking to launch another 50 within 12 months.
