Female-led Distilleries For Whisky and Gin

If you’d like to try a few whiskeys or gins before you invest in a full-size bottle for your home bar, then Whisky Loot and Gin Loot is the answer. These limited-edition tasting boxes feature three unique female-led distilleries.

Sherry Cask Single Malt by Spring Bay Distillery, Tasmania

This single malt has been matured sherry casks for a fruity, spicy profile. It is made using local rainwater in a small copper pot and produced on the Tasmanian East Coast.

Suzy Brett, Spring Bay Distillery says: “Our sherry cask [single malt] is our most awarded whisky and one of my personal favourites. It embodies strong character and complexity. My Grandmother who was a very strong and inspiring role model, often enjoyed a pre-dinner sherry this whisky also reminds me of her.”

Cask Expression – R2 Imperial Stout by Chiefs Son, Victoria

This juice began as Chief’s Son’s classic 900 Standard expression – and was slightly peated and matured in French oak barrels. The dram then enjoyed a split finish – with half aged in Imperial Porter casks from the Mornington Peninsula Brewery, whilst the other 50% was treated to some time in a Russian Imperial Stout.

Naomi McIntosh, Chief’s Son says: “I am excited to be included in the Whisky Loot box and have selected a whisky that highlights the art and science of whisky making. It’s like all great women in distilling – ‘what you see and what you get are more complex and profound than what one might expect”

Fortis Single Malt Batch II by Starward, Melbourne

This single malt has been made using Australian barley and brewer’s yeast. It is then aged in 100% American oak barrels (that previously held jammy Shiraz and Cabernets from the Barossa Valley). This whisky is robust and full-bodied resulting in a bold and flavoursome dram.

Carlie Dyer, Starward says: “Australian distilling has this new world persona and with it comes natural progression, not only the way we produce spirits, but also inclusivity. Whisky Loot is a great platform to share experience in the distilling world and I hope it encourages more women to take an interest. Starward Fortis is big and bold in flavour, which is representative of this movement!”

Review

My husband and I have tried a tasting box from both Whisky Loot and Gin Loot. The tasting packs arrived in a neat box with three cute bottles of spirit and expert tasting notes by the house specialist.

We were able to sample all three different spirits with soda water on a Saturday big-hot-date night at home. It’s best to try these with soda water so you can taste the individual flavours and nuances highlighted in the tasting notes. Although, you might prefer to try them with tonic water or create the recommended cocktails.

Did you know that Ink Gin by Husk Distillers is Margot Robbie’s all-time favourite gin?

You can order your Whisky Loot and Gin Loot as a one-off tasting pack, monthly subscription or yearly subscription, and standard bottles at members pricing, and quality mixers like tonic water and ginger ale.
