Chinese food is the favourite international cuisine of Aussies, new research shows. A nationwide survey of more than 1000 people revealed Chinese cuisine was number one, closely followed by Italian food (23 percent), Mexican (10%) and Indian (10%).
The survey, conducted for Maille Mustard, also showed that men and women have very different taste buds.
“Most women choose Italian food as their favourite style of international cuisine with men choosing Chinese,” Maille spokesperson, Julien Pourtau, said. “There’s also a significant difference between generations, with those aged 34 or under preferring Italian food to any other international cuisine, and the majority of the older generation preferring Chinese. The younger generations are also bigger fans of the spicier Mexican and Indian food than the older generations,” Mr Pourtau said.
“Aussie’s are dreaming of days when they can escape the borders and experience authentic international cuisines – but in the meantime, Australians can enjoy cooking authentic world-wide cuisine from the comfort of their home,” he said.
The research mirrors the desire of MasterChef Australia champion and celebrity chef Diana Chan, who can’t wait to travel overseas when borders reopen to get a taste of delicious and authentic food in Mexico and Italy.
“It’s a country I’ve never been to, and I’ve always wanted to explore the region,” she said. “We know so much about the food but it would be such a treat to experience it firsthand and understand what the locals produce and consume.
“I think it’s a colourful and vibrant nation and the country has a lot to offer for travellers.
“Another country I would absolutely love to return to and see more of is Italy. I would love to see more of the north when I visit next. The food in the region I feel will also be incredibly exciting and different,” she said.
“I would also have to stop over in Malaysia to visit my family whom I’ve not seen for nearly two years now. Of course, I’ll be visiting all the hawker stalls and street food for late night feasts. I feel that street food will eventually die off and I want to be able to explore as much of it as I possibly can.”
