Australia may be famous internationally for our impressive BBQ skills, but we know how to put on an elegant native spread too! Take the very best of the local produce and whip up a culinary storm. Here, Temple & Webster’s Senior Stylist and Resident Foodie, Jono Fleming, shows you how to create an Australian table setting you wont find in any other corner of the globe. You beauty!

1. Find Your ‘Blank Canvas’

Start with a rustic timber surface, which will provide your base for a relaxed dining feel. This could be your old timber outdoor table, which has been lying out in the rain.

2. Consider Colour

Think about what colours will complement your dish. This colour palette was inspired by Australian natives and flora – which compliments the tableware and styling elements. Florals are a crucial part of any table setting, really bringing the table to life. Head to your local florist to get some beautiful natives, such as blush pink banksia or blossoming gum.

3. Add Balance With Your Centrepiece

The centrepiece doesn’t have to just be about the wow factor – it can be a mixture of timber textures, bowls and platters that let the flowers be the centre of attention. A mixture of fresh fruits and nuts make for great extra styling moments on the table, and best of all, are edible!

4. Be Playful & Relax

The Australiana table is a rustic, casual affair. Don’t get too hung up on having everything match or be the same size. Mix up the bowls, plates and textures and keep it loose. A mixture of eucalyptus coloured stoneware and soft grey plates take inspiration from colour palette.

 5. Add Finishing Touches

Before you pop the bubbly, add a final bit of sparkle to the table setting with some metallic touches like some rose gold cutlery. This will add a final bit of polish to the rustic table and really set the scene for a long Australian lunch.
