The only valid reason for missing out on Ariarne Titmus‘ gold medal in the Women’s 400 metre freestyle this weekend is living under a rock. And, if you’ve ever wondered how the Australian pool princess keeps herself fuelled as a gluten-free foodie, then take a peek at her daily diet below!

Carb Queen

To start, Ariarne emphasises the importance of incorporating carbohydrate-rich naturally gluten-dree foods into her diet, essential for maintaining her energy levels during rigorous training and competitions.

“Rice and starchy veggies are my go-to carbohydrate sources, they are very easy to prepare too. I then pair it with meat and lots of fresh salad or veggies.”

Embracing European Eating Habits

Ariarne also appreciates the culinary traditions of European countries, where meals are often characterised by their simplicity and freshness. And, despite the prominence of gluten-rich foods in these cuisines, she finds that there are plenty of alternatives available.

“I prefer to eat like the French and Italian where they eat a simpler diet. Yes, bread and pastas are prominent, but they often have gluten-free alternatives that you can sub into a dish. Their meals are usually fresh, simple, and easy to make, making it easier to identify all the ingredients you’re consuming.”

Hungry for Home Cooked Meals

This focus on simplicity and control extends to the meals Ariarne enjoys at home.

“I find that I eat quite simple. One, it is easier and fast to prepare, but also, I have complete control over ensuring it is gluten free. Store-bought sauces are the biggest worry, so I try to avoid them by making my own sauces and seasoning at home. Cooking is my outlet and time for me outside of the pool so I quite enjoy making up dishes and being as creative as I can with gluten-free alternatives,” she says.

Saying Yes to (GF) Snacks!

Finally, to stay energised throughout her busy day, Ariarne always carries a selection of gluten-free snacks. And, to prove you don’t need to be a super swimmer to eat like one, relies on convenient and nutritious options by many easily accessible supermarket brands.

“I always bring snacks to munch on when out and about. Blue Dinosaur bars are great, Smoosh Balls, a good bunch of gluten-free muesli bars (Carman’s are my favourite), nuts and rice cakes with honey and peanut butter.”

As a GluteGuard ambassador, Ariarne admits to to relying on the supplement designed to help with, the risk of accidental gluten ingestion when you cannot fully be in control of your meals.

“Living gluten free means I need a little extra protection because when I’m eating out, I can’t be sure what’s on the menu.”
