I recently had a chat with my long-time pal and maquillage mentor Stephen Adderton, founder of Adderton Beauty about winter makeup.
I like to call Stephen the ‘Francois Nars’ of Australia. He’s strikingly handsome, innovative, creative, gives great make-up for any occasion and has created a line of premium cosmetics that would make any Nars aficionado swap in a second (side note: I live for his foundations).
Anyway, here’s what we unravelled in our chat about winter makeup!
1. Winter Makeup Has Star Quality
“Girls are so lucky,” says Stephen, as he paints a Hollywood red lipstick over my pout. “Winter 2021 is seeing a revival in Hollywood Vintage Glam. It is so fun, particularly after we’ve been wearing masks and living in lockdown. Now, it’s time to have fun with deep, glamorous hues reminiscent of the Golden Days of La-La Land!
“Look for a long-lasting, richly pigmented ‘Movie Star’ stain for your lips, but ensure it hydrates at the same time. Apply using a brush, to ensure precise results and minimise bleeding. Remember always to blot with a tissue too. This helps prevent lippy ending up on your teeth. If a big bold red is too much for you, opt for a strong coral hue, which suits all skin tones and be equally as dramatic without being so ‘look at me’.”

2. Purple Is The New Black
It suits that purple is the hottest colour for eyes in winter. Did you know the Elizabeth Taylor used to wear purple eyeshot to enhance the incredible blue of her eyes? It’s the kind of colour that does that for everyone. Stephen says, “simply brush the complete lid contour, then simply wing the colour out. This has the effect of lifting the eye contour and thus, giving maximum impact.”

3. Eyeliner is essential
For definition, and to make your eyes truly ‘pop’ eyeliner is a must. Stephen says, it’s all about a waterproof liner with saying power – and choose black, to complete your Hollywood look. “Add a distinct waterproof eyeliner in black that perfectly defines the lash line. Simply apply by drawing one distinct line close to the lash line. Smudge the line a touch with a cotton tip and then allow it to set for a few minutes.

4. Lashes are thick and dramatic
Two generous coats of jet black mascara will not only make your eyes appear more contoured,” says Stephen, “but it will add to the entire Hollywood glam feel. Apply it to the top lashes only, concentrating on the outer edges to give a Marilyn Monroe doe eyed look.”

5. Skin is a soft, luminous matte
“For winter makeup, opt for a complete foundation formulation that covers and hides any imperfections, offering the perfect canvas that has staying power.”
