How To Achieve A Flawless Face With YSL Beauty Creative Director Lloyd Simmonds

He’s worked with the best of the best in the industry (such as Cara Delevingne and Edie Campbell) and has directed beauty looks for the biggest shows in the world (think Gucci, Valentino Couture and Giorgio Armani).

We spoke to the makeup genius about perfecting a flawless face using the top tricks of the trade; read on for our step-by-step guide.

Step 1

Smooth, plump and hydrated skin is key for your base to look even.

“Everybody should maintain good quality skin by cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising,” says Simmonds. “You can’t just want flawless skin, you have to work for it. Remember to moisturise from the inside out too, and drink lots of water.”

Step 2

Next, pick a foundation that’s right for your skin type.

“For me, makeup is the theatre on top of flawless skin,” says Simmonds. “In the old days, you could just pack it on to hide what’s underneath, but I don’t think that’s very modern anymore. I recommend using moisturiser and a tiny bit of foundation where you need it – starting from the centre of your face, followed by a spot of concealer.”

“As a result to customer demand, a lot of people wanted a longwear foundation. It’s usually horrific, masky, heavy and chalky, so we went to the labs and made a foundation that’s featherweight and doesn’t obscure the skin’s natural texture. YSL’s new Fusion Ink foundation contains sebum and water absorbing compounds that leave your complexion velvet smooth and beautiful, and it goes undetected on skin if you use the right colour.” Try YSL Fusion Ink Foundation, $85

Step 3

Bring out  your cheekbones by contouring and highlighting special spots on your face.

“Contouring is useful if you want to minimise areas like your jowl,” says Simmonds. “I personally wouldn’t recommend it for everyday, but it’s good for a night out. For something less obvious, a product like Touche Eclat adds light rather shadows to your face.” Try YSL Touche Eclat, $59

Step 4

Add a pop of colour to your cheeks with bronzer or blush.

“Traditionally, you should set your foundation with powder before applying another powder product like blush for it to stick,” says Simmonds. “A cream product over a powdered product will stick and be really difficult to use otherwise.”

Step 5

To complete the look, finish by curling your lashes, applying mascara and some colour on the lips.
