The Number One Cleansing Trick To Reboot Your Skincare Routine

Ever since I interviewed a skin expert years ago, who told me that we didn’t cleanse our skin enough, I have been on the look-out for great cleansers. She even said something about cleansing twice (the “double cleanse”) to really make sure we got all the make-up and day’s debris out of our pores. Then I went to a facialist who said, “clean skin is good skin” and spent the better part of 60 minutes clearing the gunk out of my face. Of course now though, there are a number of fancy innovations that make cleansing fantastically easy, without me having to actually leave the house.

Enter Clinique’s new 3 step skin system. Like you, I went through a Clinique phase and did the whole 3 step thing years ago. But since working in media and having to try a bunch of different products and life and being busy and with everything else, I think I have gotten a little off track with my skincare.

Right now, all I’m after is something easy to use that actually works. This is the year to start taking care of myself, I’ve decided, and that starts with my face (and ends somewhere around my mouth, gobbling dinner, but that’s a different resolution!). So I went back to Clinique, and was genuinely surprised with how much I loved the results. I did a quick skin check on their website which determined that my skin was Combination/Oily, grabbed the three products and off I went.

As always when I start a new skin-care routine, there is a little drama and anticipation before I try the product. Will I like it? Will it work? What will I look like afterwards? The cleanser felt lovely and didn’t have an awful fake smell that a lot of products can. Afterwards, my skin was soft to touch, my pores looked clearer – one of my absolute prerequisites if I’m going to continue with a skin care range – and I wasn’t dry at all. Really lovely, easy, thorough cleansing.

Then came the clarifying lotion. Now, naughty of me I know, I haven’t used a toner in years. But Clinique’s Clarifying Lotion is a toner with a point: it exfoliates. Gently. We all know the benefits of regular exfoliation and as you get older it only becomes more important. Regular, gentle exfoliation will leave skin clearer and more luminous. This one is a beautifully soft lotion that went on easily and felt amazing. I’m addicted.

But the big test came with the moisturizer because I have a tendency to get oily as the day goes on and my one wish, which I don’t think is too much to ask for in this digital age, is for a moisturiser that doesn’t make my skin look oily, yet keeps it soft, supple and genuinely moisturised.

Well Clinique, job done. Congratulations. You’ve succeeded where other brands have failed. And because the whole three step thing is so ridiculously easy, I’ve kept this up for weeks and have really noticed a change in my skin. It’s clearer, brighter and generally feels fantastic, all day long. The difference in using a sonic brush to just washing with fingers or a face washer is rather phenomenal and everyone should have the privilege of trying it. Clean skin is good skin ladies, clean skin is good skin.
