The low pony looks set to be the must-try hair style for the coming season, if the New York catwalks are anything to go by (and they usually are). The ‘do was spotted at Derek Lam (above), Dion Lee and Hugo Boss, to name a few. Want help perfecting this sleek and chic look? Read on …
“Whether you want to create a low sleek ponytail or a high textured one, you must always backcomb,” says Remington Schulz, celebrity hairstylist at Sydney’s Edwards & Co. Why? “Because, most of us have flat crowns so a little extra height helps make this hairstyle perfect.”
But, is there such a thing as too low? “The ideal spot where your ponytail should sit is just below the ear lobes,” explains Schulz. “Any lower — like at the very nape of the nape of the neck — can drag down the appearance of your face.”
HOW TO …
1. Blow dry hair smooth.
2. If you have any curls or kinks, use a flat iron to smooth them out.
3. Apply a smoothing serum like TONI&GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe Classic Smoothing Lotion ($15.99) to flat-ironed hair.
4. Brush all sections of the hair back until you have a smooth ponytail. You can choose whether to leave your natural part visible or hidden.
5. Secure ponytail with an elastic band (like Lady Jayne Super Hold Elastics ($7.99) and lightly mist hair with Redken Fashion Work 12 ($26.95, 1300 650 170).
6. Next, take a small 1 cm section of the ponytail and wrap around the elastic band to hide it. Secure with bobby pins as required.
7. Finish with Evo Gangsta Grip Bonding Resin ($26.95) for a sleek finish.
Schulz’s pro tip: when trying to achieve a slicked back ponytail, blast hairspray along your hairline and use the side of the can to flatten any fly-aways.
