The maestro that is Ms. Rae Morris devised glamorously wearable looks that can quite easily be taken from runway to road. A keynote VAMFF makeup trend was ‘individuality’, a stiletto-step away from the usual uniformity on runways – each look was adapted to the model’s face, “these shows are all about individualising every girl,” notes Rae.
These are our top five backstage beauty musings, makeup aficionados take heed.
VAMFF MAKEUP TREND: Eye Contouring
The ‘C’ word for contouring is now so ubiquitous in the makeup world; it is but a rite of (beauty) passage for those making up their faces. Here, Rae foregoes the face, and applied to peepers only. “We’re doing an eye contouring, so it’s like the same colours you’d use for contouring, taupey colours, and it’s creating a natural socket on the eyelids,” says the makeup queen. “I create the most youthful socket, and what that is, is you look straight ahead, and wherever the eyelashes just sit on the lid, go with a matte taupe colour and sculpt and carve out the socket. I never put a socket where the shadow is and match it. A socket is most beautiful just where the natural eyelashes sit.”

VAMFF MAKEUP TREND: Wearable Glitter
Hey there, glitterbug; girls were twinkling with dots of sparkle in what was Rae’s relatable take on glitter. “Normally glitter is my pet hate, but what I wanted to do is make it not too girly and Mardi Gras,” Rae notes. “This is the softest element and I’m just putting it on the centre of the eyeballs, so when you blink you get these diamonds. On the runway it looks like you’ve got little diamonds right in the middle of the eye.” Remember, glitter matching 101 is to skin-tone: “We’ve got three colours; a silver going on the pale skin, medium skin is gold and then on the dark girls we’ve got black, the darker the skin, the closer the glitter colour so it looks tonal.”

VAMFF MAKEUP TREND: Put Away the Powder
The unusually sweltering Melbourne day called for some serious anti-shine action, with Rae enlightening us on her battle to blot. “I’m not powdering at all, I’m using blotting papers, I don’t do powder,” she says resolutely. “Blotting papers will take away as much shine as powder, when you blot, it will get rid of 99% of the oil, when you powder, the powder doesn’t stick. My rule with any makeup is: if someone is really shiny, don’t you dare go with powder, because shine is oil and oil grabs powder. When you add oil and water to it, it goes three shades darker, that’s why some girls leave the house with beautiful skin, powder later, then don’t understand why they’re getting these massive marks on their face. Powder goes into lines, it ages you, put that powder down!”

VAMFF MAKEUP TREND: Lash On Top
The girls fluttered down the Vogue Runway sans lashings of bottom mascara. “With mascara, we’re just doing top lashes. No bottom mascara because it makes your eye more round, we want to give the eyes more lift, and don’t want the girls looking too young,” says Rae. “Top and bottom can make them look a bit girly and doll-like. Some girls even have no mascara, whatever makes them look beautiful, because every girl is different.”

VAMFF MAKEUP TREND: Berry Stained Lips
Model pouts were stained in baby hues of berry and burgundy. “We stained the lips with lipsticks that reflect the colour of when you were a baby, that rich berry colour, that’s a sign of youth,” articulates Rae. “Interestingly enough, that berry colour is universal; it universally suits everyone. You never look at a child with that natural red and go that doesn’t suit you, it’s the ultimate lipstick.”
