A love letter to Bobbi Brown’s Extra Lip Tint.
I love makeup, I am a blush fanatic, a highlighter aficionado. The suggestion of a concealer that won’t crease sets my heart racing and I have more eyeshadow pallets than I can poke a proverbial Mac 217 at.
The one product I rarely reach for? Lipstick. This is partly laziness. Lipstick feels like too much work. I can execute a perfect wing or hazy smokey eye without worrying that my efforts will be wasted the moment I lift a champagne flute to my mouth.
The other reason? My lips are incredibly dry. When I do apply a tinted balm or hydrating lipstick I find the promised pigment has a knack for adhering to dry flakes I never knew I had. That, or the product fails to absorb, sitting unevenly on my lips like the goopy remains of a jam sandwich – not a look or feel I’m interested in.
A Brief Beauty History:
My general disinterest in lip products meant I was unaware the hype behind the Bobbi Brown Lip Tint range. However, a cursory investigation revealed that beauty editors and bloggers have been lusting after the product for years. Bobbi Brown released the Lip Tint in 2016 as a limited edition item, in a single shade “Bare Pink”. It instantly sold out. Consequently, reviews from 2016 saw beauty editors beseeching the brand to make the Lip Tint permanent, stockpiling the product that gave them instant volume and a convincingly natural “just bitten” look. Finally, in 2018 Bobbi Brown ceded to popular demand and brought back the formula with three additional shades. Now in 2019 they are adding to the collection with three colours: Bare Nude, Bare Blackberry and Bare Raspberry.
Trial and Triumph:
My first thought trialling the lip tints? They would be easy to over-apply as they feel so good going on. The balm formula is plush and cushioning, with a slight cooling sensation. However, there is no need to worry about over application. The colour deposited is sheer, and the texture is fine enough that pigment and hydration saturate the lips. What’s more, when the gloss from the balm has worn off, a subtle stain is left behind delivering longer wearing color. Bobbi Brown have categorized the Lip Tint range under their “Extra” treatment line. They promise that the Lip Tints will deliver “fewer lines, fuller lips and zero flakes”. They are backing up these promises with some powerhouse ingredients, the tints contain Vitamin C and Olive, Avocado and Jojoba Oils. I can confirm that the Lip Tints perform like a treatment product, my lips were left feeling smooth, supple and hydrated – the gorgeous colour was just a bonus.
The new shades in the Bobbi Brown Lip Tint Extra range join previous releases Pink, Punch and Melon. Each colour mingles with the natural pigment of your lips to create a unique shade. My personal favourite is Bare Blackberry, a cool-toned violet. However, I suspect I’ll be adding the others to my rotation in no time.
