Pigmentation is when areas of your skin darken, and this can be in smaller patches or larger areas. Typically a result of your skin producing more melanin however pigmentation can be genetic or as a result of continuous sun exposure without correct protection. Here are Senior Dermal Therapist at SSKIN, Christie Cameron’s 5 suggested ways to even out pigmentation:

1. Know your pigmentation

First and most important step is to know your pigmentation. Are we dealing with sun damage? Or hormonal pigmentation? This is really important to know, as there are many factors we need to consider when planning the treatment of pigmentation. Incorrect treatments and products can lead to the condition appearing darker. If you are unsure what type of pigmentation you have seek professional advice for a correct diagnosis.

2. Wear your SPF!

The most important step! SPF everyday! If you are serious about getting rid of pigmentation then you need to get really serious about applying SPF every day and reapplication throughout the day. UV light is the main contributing factor to the stimulation of melanin production within the skin. Don’t think it’s ok to not put it on because it’s not sunny or I don’t go in the sun…the sun emits UVA and UVB rays both stimulate pigmentation production. UVB ray is your burning ray when you are exposed to direct sunlight, but the silent assassin is the UVA ray our Ageing ray, which you can still get driving in the car or sitting by a window

3. Choose the right products

Brightening products like vitamin C or products containing tyrosinase inhibitors. The way they work is by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme which helps to prevent melanin production, making pigmentation harder to form. If your unsure what product is right for you seek professional advice

4. Protect your eyes from UV rays

Wear UV protective sunglasses! Pigmentation can be stimulated but the light absorption from our eyes, which triggers Melanocyte stimulating hormones, which are produced by the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and skin cells.

5. Professional treatment

There are some fantastic treatments to help reduce the appearance of pigmentation, from peels to lasers. On the right treatment plan you can see some incredible results. Again it’s important to know and understand the type of pigmentation you have so you can have the correct course of treatment. Seek professional advice.
