The past year has seen Australia experience some of its driest and hottest months to date with temperatures reaching 1.52C above the long-term average. With these conditions expected to continue, low-maintenance gardens, foodscaping, urban oases and creating flow between inside and outside spaces will be at the forefront of 2020’s garden trends with the goal of not only adapting to the harsh weather but doing so stylishly.

Low-Maintenance Gardening

This trend will prove to be particularly important given the water restrictions. Instead of opting for the green grass that needs to be constantly taken care of, go for some paving to avoid the high maintenance and keep the style.

By combining paving from Tuscan Path and Pottery from Northcote Pottery, you can mix up palette colours and textures and different pottery sizes. For the harsher conditions, try the Premium Honeycomb Bluestone paver, or the Charcoal Porcelain paver which are designed to withstand heat.

Alternatively, for a softer look, you can separate pavers with plant pots or shrubbery or line paths.

Encourage the disarray of vines, the overlapping fronds and explosions of colour from the blooms. It’ll give the space that much more character.

Another way to keep your garden low-maintenance is by adding water features such as the ‘Summit Fountain’ with provides your garden space with a gentle and calming water trickle that complements the surrounding plants and can be used as a centrepiece.

Foodscaping

In 2020, edible gardens indoor and out are hugely popular nowadays with many people looking towards sustainability and getting closer to nature. The favoured plants include silverbeet and lettuces as well as fruit and veg like bush beans, cucumbers and tomatoes.

You can place your foodscaping products in any number of pots paired with natural pavers like the grey granite paver is perfect for edging garden beds because it’s strong and durable.

Urban Oases

Use outdoor furniture to style a specific space and project different moods. For example, add the ‘Albert’ from Tuscan Path as a water feature for a peaceful, endless water cycle. Or for a tranquil trickling, implement the ‘Osaka’ – the modern take on the bamboo water feature.

Find Your Flow

Couple expansive glazing with flowing paving to connect the inside and outside areas and create a seamless transition into nature. The pavers you choose need to be durable and resistant to both the Australian climate and cooking appliances. Go for Porcelain pavers such as Taupe or Charcoal for, stain and slip resistance as well as general low maintenance.
