Love to snack on handfuls of nibbles, celery sticks, or even sweets?

1. You’re not alone – interestingly, Wonderful Pistachios  released research revealing that 60% of Australians crave snacks throughout the day, eclipsing the urge for “partner-time” between the sheets (49%) or cuddles (39%).

2. It’s also worth noting that 51% of Australians like to snuggle up with snacks in bed – it’s almost the best of both worlds, no?

“Snacking behaviours often have an emotional connection and cravings can be closely linked to a range of memories including what makes us feel happy,” says clinical psychologist Leanne Hall. “The feel-good factor of snacks can trigger positive memories and a sensation of happiness so it’s no surprise that snacking emerged as a leading source of cravings.”

3. More statistics have revealed that 58% of the population pack their favourite treat as a holiday travel essential, and 48% claim that their favourite snack provides a sense of comfort when away from home.

“It seems there is an emotional connection with favourite snacks which can complement or alter our mood in a similar way to a comfort blanket,” Hall added.

4. While snacking isn’t detrimental to your health at all, we need to accept our cravings, recognise what our body needs and be equipped with snacks that are nutritious.

“When you’re snacking, learn to know how it feels when you’re comfortably full, aiming for around 80% full,” says Hall. “Find ways of slowing down your snack intake, pause to savour the flavours and think about how full you really feel.”

5. Want to know what the number one trigger to snacking is? It’s actually being around other people that snack too.

“81% of the Australian population believes that others snacking influences our own snacking behaviour. In fact, 63% of Australians admit they’re more likely to eat unhealthy snacks if those around them are doing so,” says Hall.
