What is Tantouring? Plus Tips From Margot Robbie’s Makeup Artist To Nail It

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok lately, you’ll know that contouring has had a glow-up. Enter: tantouring — the sun-kissed evolution of sculpting that swaps harsh lines and heavy powders for something softer, bronzier and infinitely more wearable.

And if anyone knows how to master a modern glow, it’s Margot Robbie. The actor’s luminous, barely-there glam for the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights has beauty lovers scrambling for details — and now her longtime makeup artist, Pati Dubroff, has revealed one of her hero products … and it’s (drum roll) the cult Three Warriors Hydrabronze Tan Drops.

So, what exactly is tantouring?

Tantouring is exactly what it sounds like: contouring with self-tan. Instead of carving out cheekbones with matte bronzer, you apply a gradual tanning product strategically along the natural shadow points of the face — under cheekbones, along the jawline, temples and sometimes the nose. The result? Subtle, long-lasting definition that looks like it belongs to your skin, not layered on top of it.

Unlike traditional contour, which can fade or smudge throughout the day, tantouring develops over several hours and can last for days. It’s low maintenance, gym-proof, and perfectly aligned with the broader shift toward skin-first beauty.

It also dovetails seamlessly with the viral “Aussie Makeup” trend — that lived-in, bronzed, sun-kissed aesthetic built on radiant skin, creamy bronzers, soft brown liner and glossy lips. Think less sculpted influencer glam, more Bondi at golden hour.

The glow behind Margot’s glam

Dubroff recently credited Three Warriors Hydrabronze Tan Drops as key to achieving a flawless base. Designed to deliver a natural, buildable glow, the drops are enriched with hydrating and antioxidant-rich ingredients including hyaluronic acid and Kakadu plum.

The beauty of the formula lies in its versatility. Simply mix a few drops into your moisturiser, apply as usual, and let the tan develop gradually. The result is a smooth, even golden complexion that looks effortless — never streaky or overly bronzed.

But beyond colour payoff, the skincare benefits are what elevate it. Hyaluronic acid helps draw moisture into the skin, while Kakadu plum — a native Australian ingredient renowned for its vitamin C content — supports brightness and overall skin health. In other words, it’s multitasking at its finest: glow, hydration and barrier support in one step.

How to tantour at home

Ready to try it yourself? Here’s how to nail the look:

1. Start fresh.
Cleanse and lightly exfoliate to create a smooth canvas.

2. Map your face.
Using a small brush or your fingers, apply the tan drops (mixed with moisturiser) to the areas you would typically contour: under cheekbones, temples, jawline and hairline.

3. Blend carefully.
Diffuse edges with a clean brush or damp sponge. Remember — subtlety is key.

4. Let it develop.
Allow several hours (or overnight) for the tan to deepen before applying makeup.

Once developed, you’ll find you need far less base product. A touch of concealer, creamy blush and glossy lips are often enough. The sculpting is already built in.
