Now is the time when our New Year’s weight-loss resolutions are at the most vulnerable stage.

We’re back at the office with all the usual stresses, or the kids are driving us to reach for those treats that only a few days ago we’d banished for good.

But help is now at hand thanks to the experts at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The scientists there believe the secret to sticking to your weight-loss goals lies in customising a health plan tailored to your personality type.

“Your personality can play a vital role in your ability to persist with a healthy eating plan,” says CSIRO behavioural scientist Dr Sinead Golley.

“In spite of this, however, people often focus on nutrition and exercise information and ignore behavioural and emotional aspects that influence a person’s eating.

“This means many Australians are making New Year’s weight-loss resolutions ‘blind’, and not understanding what approach may best fit their personality and lifestyle, and what challenges they may face.”

After extensive research into the emotional, psychological and behavioural patterns that influence our eating habits, the CSIRO says we can all be broken down into the below five categories:

  • The Thinker– Overthinking leads to stress and mood swings which can derail your eating patterns.
  • The Craver– This person’s heightened experience of cravings can lead to overeating in a variety of ‘tricky’ situations.
  • The Foodie– Food is on your mind 24/7 – you love making, eating and experiencing it.
  • The Socialiser– Flexibility is essential – you won’t let strict food restrictions stifle your
    social life.
  • The Freewheeler– Spontaneous and impulsive, you tend to make choices in the here-and-now.

You can find out what category you fit into by taking a free five-minute survey here.

You then have the option of signing up for the CSIRO’s 12-week Total Wellbeing Diet program for $149, which is fully refundable if you successfully complete the course.

Members receive a more comprehensive profile of their diet type with expert tips and a personalised 12-week menu plan.
