It may be known as ‘the city of churches’ and Adelaide is certainly not short of a spire or a stain glassed window! But, the South Australian capital has certainly shaken it’s ‘sleepy country town’ label. Yes, Adelaide has a deep multi-cultural centre, gourmet trail extraordinaire, a thriving urban arts and music scene, markets, street food and of course, some of the best wine regions in Australia only a stone’s throw away.

Recently, I had the pleasure of staying with the Intercontinental in the centre of this bubbling urban city. The man who looked after me was Head Concierge at the Intercontinental, Siddhartha Kaul and here, he shares his top insider tips for your next visit to Adelaide.

When friends are in town I take them for a drink at…

Just a short walk from the hotel, Sean’s blends the diverse neighbourhoods of New York into a rich environment, popular with Adelaide’s trendiest. This combined with quality produce and range of specially-crafted beverages ensures a memorable experience.

Adelaide’s best kept secret is…

Mclaren Vale

Whilst for years the Barossa Valley has been considered the prominent wine producing region in South Australia, Mclaren Vale, located just over 40 minutes from the city is arguably more impressive. The spectacular countryside and adjacent coastline is home to some of the finest and most unique wineries and restaurants, many of which have retained their original charm.

If I were a visitor with a free day I would…

Begin your day with some early morning exercise along the picturesque River Torrens before heading to the Adelaide Central Markets. Make the most of the fresh produce and knowledgeable local traders to collect some supplies for a picnic later. Ride the tram back through the heart of the city, before enjoying a stroll down North Terrace taking in the beautiful buildings and engaging your cultural side. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and if it’s a game day join the crowds heading to the redeveloped Adelaide Oval for some world-class sporting action. Alternatively visit the National Wine Centre, the perfect way to uncover some of the regions finest wines without leaving the city. In the evening take in a show at the Adelaide Festival Centre before completing your day with a drink at one of Adelaide’s newest bars in Peel or Leigh St.
