Tell us about your new collection: Collette Dinnigan for The Australian Ballet at Target

“It is a collection for all little girls who dream of being a ballerina, and for all mums who love pretty clothes for their daughters – filled with layers of tulle, sparkles and lace. The best thing is that it is available at a very affordable price.”

How did the collaboration with The Australian Ballet come about?

“About four years ago I was talking to Sarah (Murdoch, Deputy Chair of the Australian Ballet) and she was asking if I had any ideas on how to get the ballet to a younger audience. I came up with the idea of partnering with Target and designing a tutu collection where Target would give a percentage of sales back to the ballet. Ten percent of sales from the collection go to the Australian Ballet Education Fund, which helps bring ballet to children all across the country.”

Do you, or your children, have a love of ballet?

“I don’t know any little girl that hasn’t wanted to be a ballerina at some stage! My daughter Estella went through a time when we had to let her sleep in her tutu. I have always had a great appreciation of the ballet and been inspired by the costumes.”

Explain The Nutcracker inspiration behind the collection?

“The Nutcracker is one of the greatest ballets in the world and one that children absolutely love. It’s a world where dreams come true and I thought it was the perfect fit for the story of the collection.”

What’s the aim of the collection?

“I think the collection is about inspiring little girls to be interested in ballet and the magic of dancing. Every little girl dreams of being a ballerina and the collection really builds on that.”

How do you think little girls will respond to the collection?

“I hope they love the collection, otherwise I haven’t done my part!”

Any plans for little boys’ collections in the future?

“Everyone is asking about the boys! We will see what the future brings…”

What’s next for Collette Dinnigan?

“The focus is now on my exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, which is due to open in August 2015. We are hard at work transforming it into something incredible.”

The Collette Dinnigan for The Australian Ballet Collection at Target launched nationally into select stores and online on November 6, 2014. Prices range from $29 – $69.
