Reduce your power bill

Alongside serums that retail for $800, and flat whites that now cost $8 a pop, power bills are another victim of the Cost of Living crisis … an unwelcome surprise lurking in your inbox, ready to ruin your morning coffee every month. But, before you start rationing your kettle boils or trying to convince your hubby that you’re having dinner by candlelight again because “it’s romantic”  there are easier ways to slash your energy costs without sacrificing comfort. Here’s how you can keep the lights on (without breaking the bank) and reduce your power bill.

1. Tame power-hungry appliances

Your home is full of energy-sucking thieves. And, we’re not just talking about the contestants on MAFS who woo you in and wipe you out with their latest dramas! TVs, washing machines, fridges, and even your ‘off’ but not really off microwave are also guilty culprits. The trick? Smarter usage. Switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs, unplug chargers when they’re not in use (yes, even your phone charger is a culprit), and avoid standby mode on appliances. If you have an old fridge humming away in the garage, it might be time to retire it – older models are notorious for guzzling power. And when washing clothes, stick to cold water; your hot water cycle is basically a money pit in disguise.

2. Get informed about insulation

You wouldn’t head out in mid June without a jacket, so why let your home suffer the same fate? Proper insulation keeps heat in during Winter and out during Summer. That means less reliance on power-hungry heaters and air conditioners. Draught-proofing is another game-changer – sealing up those pesky gaps around doors and windows can prevent heat loss and keep your home comfy without the extra expense.

3. Shop smarter and make the switch

Loyalty doesn’t always pay. Especially when it comes to your electricity provider. Many of us are stuck on outdated, expensive plans simply because we haven’t compared options. Enter GoSwitch – an easy way to compare energy providers and reduce your power bill. A quick switch could save you hundreds of dollars a year, and all it takes is a few minutes of research. It’s basically bonus money in your pocket, with zero effort.

4. Soak up the sun (and save big)

If you haven’t already considered solar power, now might be the time. Sure, the upfront cost isn’t pocket change, but government incentives and long-term savings make it worth it. Solar panels mean you’ll be harnessing free energy straight from the sun, which translates to significantly lower electricity bills. Plus, any excess energy your system produces can be sold back to the grid. Free money? Perfect for treating yourself to an extra cup of coffee with brunch. Guilt-free!

GoSwitch can help you find a great solar plan & help you compare solar panel providers.
