Cutting a regal figure on the red carpet at the opening night of the 67th Cannes Film Festival, Nicole Kidman conjures the cool beauty, venerable style and acclaimed talent of the iconic woman she plays in Grace of Monaco.

The award-winning Australian actress draws parallels between her own life and that of Grace Kelly – the starring character in the film – who famously gave up her glittering Hollywood career for love and family and married Prince Rainer III of Monaco in 1956.

“There are so many layers to this, when an actress is playing an actress,” she said.  “Obviously I did not marry a prince.” She corrected herself, no doubt remembering hearth and home with singer Keith Urban in Nashville. “Well, I am married to a prince – a country prince!”

Kidman said of Princess Grace; “She was unique, in that she was a major American movie star who won an Academy Award at a very early age and then said ‘I’m actually going to leave it all, because I want a marriage and a family’,” said Kidman. “I think that’s a very strong thrust for many people – and not just women. If you are a creative person and have a passion, which Grace did, there is a pull,” she told press.

While the Grimaldi royal family has distanced itself from the film, which has received the full spectrum of industry critique and acclaim, there is little doubt that Kidman is a befitting choice to play the iconic American-actress-turned-Princess.

Selected to open the Cannes Film Festival, Grace of Monaco, portrays a fictional few months in 1962 during which time Grace considered returning to acting after her marriage to Prince Ranier appeared to have faltered. Made by Olivier Dahan, the reknowned French director famed for La Vie en Rose, Grace of Monaco is in cinemas June 5th.
