Having true self-confidence means being assured in our own worth, ability and power, regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.

It means conducting ourselves in a calm, humble and composed manner even in the most intimidating and chaotic circumstances.

For many of us though, techniques to build confidence have to be learned, written down and practiced repeatedly, especially before walking into a major meeting, presentation or interview.

It’s critical to know what our self-confidence ‘triggers’ are.

What, exactly, makes us feel ready to perform, engage and influence?

1. Cardio Hit

Whether it’s a 10km run at 5am or a few cheeky yoga moves between the bed and the shower, take some time to kick-start your metabolism and ignite your endorphins for the day.

2. Caffeine Shot

It’s not just the caffeine shot, it’s the interaction with the barista that can also boost your energy level. In fact there is evidence that positive daily encounters make us feel included and activates dopamine in our brain.

3. Commanding Content

Set aside time to create and get comfortable with you content. Do you have an introduction, information and end? Do you have recommendations for your audience and are you constantly addressing their concerns and their commercial obstacles? And is this reflected in a warm, unwavering tone of voice?

4. Get Great Hair

The only thing better than a great blowout is one that lasts into the next day. Great hair equals that little bit of a strut, so embrace the blow-dryer and hair products that work. Or if you’d rather leave it to the experts, invest in a package deal at your local Blow Dry Bar.

5. Heighten Up

There’s a reason why Jimmy Choo is a billion dollar brand. As long as you don’t have to negotiate a downhill cobblestone path (as I did recently – it didn’t end well) slip into your favourite pair of peep-toes or classy platforms to give yourself that extra few inches of influence.

6. Find a Flawless Fit

Performed a wardrobe inventory lately? How well does your shift dress fit? When we step into something that doesn’t make us feel good, it undermines our self-confidence and often makes us look bigger than we really are. When have you felt the most indestructible? I bet it was when you slid into a dress or suit that made you feel like a supermodel. Go forth and tailor, until everything in your wardrobe makes you feel that good.
