If the sleek new fringe is anything to go by, then one can safely assume that Nicole Kidman will handle her rumoured divorce from husband of roughly 19 years, Keith Urban, with all the confidence you’d expect from an Academy Award winner who made the world fall in love with her carrot hued curls. However, while we wait to watch it play out, Cassandra Kalpaxis, founder of Kalpaxis Legal, shares her Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban divorce predictions. And all the expert advice on how to actually execute an amicable separation like you mean it.

From a legal perspective, an amicable separation is about mutual respect, efficiency, and keeping the personal damage to a minimum. “It means being considerate of the other person’s position and focusing on what’s in the best interest of the children above their own needs,” Cassandra explains. In other words, it’s not about scorched-earth strategies or courtroom drama. It’s a conscious effort to end a relationship thoughtfully, respectfully, and with children’s well-being as the guiding principle.

Despite what tabloids might have us believe, amicable separations are far from rare, even in high-profile cases. “It’s actually very common, we just don’t hear about it because it doesn’t make for a good story,” Cassandra notes. She cites Gwyneth Paltrow as a celebrity who navigated her divorce quietly and respectfully, proving that separation doesn’t have to be a public spectacle. “Most people want to hear about the really messy, acrimonious separations because they’re more interesting to read about,” she adds, but in reality, more and more celebrities are choosing the calmer path.

When children are involved, the stakes – and the responsibilities – rise. Legal and practical considerations focus on what’s genuinely in the children’s best interests. “That means ensuring they have a good and accessible relationship with both parents in a way that suits their unique family dynamic,” Cassandra says. Australian law emphasises safety, appropriateness, and practical matters such as travel and family structure. Provided there are no major risk factors like domestic violence or substance abuse, children generally benefit from as liberal a relationship with both parents as possible.

Of course, even the most respectful separations aren’t without pitfalls. Cassandra points out that public perception can complicate matters, especially when media narratives skew the story. “There’s been a narrative that’s quite favourable to Nicole…If that hasn’t been discussed between the couple, it can really derail their relationship as co-parents and affect how they communicate moving forward.” Misinterpretations, tone loss, or one-sided reporting can turn an otherwise amicable separation sour. And when emotions take over, disputes often shift from pragmatic parenting concerns to matters of principle, triggering unnecessary litigation, financial strain, and emotional stress.

Media attention itself poses a unique challenge. High-profile separations like Keith and Nicole’s unfold under relentless scrutiny, and that spotlight can magnify normal human vulnerabilities. Cassandra draws a comparison with Lamar Odom and Khloé Kardashian, where public exposure complicated personal emotions. “When you live in the public eye…these people are still human beings. They experience the same emotions as anyone else—shame, embarrassment, grief—and those feelings can make it much harder to communicate openly with their ex-partner,” she says. Often, communication is filtered through lawyers or PR teams rather than direct, human conversation, which is exactly the interaction that facilitates compassionate and effective resolutions.

So what practical steps can couples take to navigate an amicable separation while keeping the children front and centre? Cassandra is clear: independent emotional support is key. “It’s really important for people to get help from a psychologist to deal with the emotional side of their breakup. Whatever the circumstances, they need to work through that with a therapist so that those emotions don’t spill into negotiations or co-parenting discussions.”

She advises treating co-parenting discussions like business meetings – emotion parked to the side – while consistently prioritising the children’s needs. That might mean adjusting parenting schedules for homework, sport, or rest rather than insisting on a predetermined plan. Being present and supportive, attending school events, and maintaining a non-judgmental, respectful approach are all crucial. In essence, the same care and respect shown during the early stages of the relationship should extend into the separation and beyond.

While the tabloids may speculate and fans may debate, the reality is that amicable separations are possible, even for celebrity couples navigating decades of shared history. With thoughtful legal guidance, emotional support, and a focus on children’s well-being, Keith and Nicole – or any couple – can manage a divorce with dignity, respect, and perhaps even a little grace.

In the end, it’s less about headlines and more about setting a precedent for how separation can be done with empathy, communication, and a clear-eyed view of what truly matters. And if anyone can navigate it with style, it’s probably Nicole Kidman. Fringe and all.
