How To Weather-Proof Your Hair This Winter

Dale Delaporte, creative director of Prema and expert hair stylist, shares his best tips for bearing the worst of winter weather – rain, hail or shine.

Today’s Weather: Very Windy

So you’ve woken up 15 minutes early to blowdry your hair, when it all just goes to waste as soon as you step outside and a massive gust of wind messes up your perfectly groomed ‘do.

“Flyaways are a result of dry hair reaching out for moisture, or if your hair is overprocessed and underloved,” says Delaporte. “A regular moisture treatment can combat dehydration, rebuild, strengthen and moisturise each strand.” Try Tigi Reborn Serenity Smoothing Texture Refine Masque, $46

“Little hairs can also mean that your hair is growing – so be thankful! Stay away from hairspray in this instance, as the alcohol will just make it more thirsty and you’ll have to fight a different battle altogether.” Try Evo End Doctor, $29.95

Today’s Weather: Cold And Dry

You look outside and for once, the sky is blue and clear! You step outside and immediately feel like all moisture is sucked out of your exposed face and limbs; your lips immediately crack and your nail beds are so dry that they turn white. But worst of all, your hair starts to snap…

“If you have any chemical work on your hair such as bleach, tints or even demi-permanent colour, you should be using moisture and protein treatments in some capacity to protect your hair,” says Delaporte. “A regular leave-in product could be your missing link to great hair. Comb a 10-20 cent sized-piece through hair and style as normal.” Try Goldwell Elixir, $34.95

“If you need to keep your hair away from your face, avoid tying it back tight in a pony. Try styles like pinning it into a bun, plaits, or twisting it away from the face to prevent snappage.”

Today’s Weather: High Humidity and Rain

It looks cloudy outside, but the air feels sticky. Teensy water particles in the air can make hair appear oily and flat, which is never a good look. Even a hat or beanie can’t save the day.

“Quite ignoring the inevitable and embrace your natural texture and wave,” continues Delaporte. “A sea salt spray will give your hair a natural and malleable texture and will keep the volume up.” Try KMS Hairplay Sea Salt Spray, $33.95

“If you’re scared of dry shampoo in humid weather because of what I like to call ‘cake dough hair’, I would suggest a dry shampoo that contains rice and wheat starch (instead of talc), which means no clouds of powder or clumping, with maximum oil absorption.” Try Evo Water Killer Dry Shampoo, $32.95
