The wilds of majestic Chile has put it at the top of Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2018’ collection ahead of South Korea, Portugal, Djibouti and New Zealand.

The Carousel takes a look at what is drawing people far and wide to this country. Part of the attraction is the country’s distinct culture, diverse landscapes and mysterious history all contributed to the country earning itself the coveted title.

It’s safe to say, Chile should be on every traveller’s bucket list, and 2018, is the time to discover its wonders – here’s just a few reasons why.

Star gazing heaven

Due to its high attitude, dry air (driest non-polar place on Earth), lack of pollution and lack of cloud cover, Chile’s Atacama Desert offers the most spectacular star gazing on the planet. Feel the surreal vastness of the Mars and Moon valleys, and see the colours in the desert transform at sunset.

Vino, Vino, Vino

Chile’s wine can be summed up in a couple words: quality and diversity. With one of the few Mediterranean areas in the world like California and South Africa, here is where you’ll find many of the world’s best vineyards producing a staggering amount of varietals. The great thing about exploring Chile’s wineries is that many world-class bodegas are easily reached from its capital, Santiago, and other popular cities like Valparaíso and Viña del Mar.

Nature Lover’s Paradise

The outstanding number of national parks and beauty of the country make Chile a dream destination for nature lovers looking to get their fix. Just a few of the highlights include Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, a firm favourite for hikers; the penguin colonies around Punta Arenas; and the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park in the lake district, home to the towering Osorno Volcano.
